Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (World) Which U.S presidential candidate put out an ad in 2008 which posed the question, "It's 3 am and your children are safe and asleep. Who do *you* want answering the phone?"

Answer: Hillary Clinton

The ad was considered to have been effective as a "scare tactic". Hillary Clinton also lost the 2016 presidential election and a Maine East High School senior class one, after which one of her male rivals told her she was "really stupid" if she thought girls could be presidents. Is stupidity, perhaps, less of an obstacle for an aspiring candidate?
2. (Brain Teasers) According to this wordwise, where is it 3 am? FAIRYIT'STHREEAMLAND

Answer: In Fairyland

The phrase "It's 3am" is *in* the word "fairyland"; hence, it's 3 am in fairyland. Incidentally, "wordwise" is a real word that means "of or characteristic of a word or words; verbal"- (source: yourdictionary.com).
3. (History) The RMS Carpathia rescued about 705 people who'd been passengers on board the Titanic on 15th April, 1912, from lifeboats in the North Atlantic Ocean. In what situation were the eventual survivors, at 3 am that night?

Answer: They were in lifeboats, waiting to be rescued

The Titanic finished sinking at 2:20 am. Arthur Rostron, the captain of the Carpathia, ordered extra stokers for the purpose of creating enough steam for the ship to travel at over 17 knots and successfully navigated it around icebergs. The Carpathia reached the Titanic at about 4 am. A number of survivors died from exposure and hypothermia after being rescued.
4. (Entertainment) Which "highbrow" online literary magazine's slogan is, "Whatever it is, we're against it"?

Answer: 3:AM Magazine

3:AM Magazine is edited in Paris; its editor-in-chief is Sorbonne lecturer Andrew Gallix, and has been since it was created in 2000. "The Daily Mirror" described it as being "suitibly roguish for a website that aims to be an online Fitzrovia" (Fitzrovia being a "district in Central London").
5. (Music) It's certainty not true that a score of oddly (not insanely, but only just a little unhealthily) flammable singers sing "3 am". Which band has a song called "3 am"?

Answer: Matchbox 20

Matchbox 20 is a pop/soft rock/ pseudo grunge band that first became world famous in 1996. Their song "Push" uses the same 4 chords (D, A, Bm and G, when transposed to the key of D) as the comedy trio "Axis of Awesome" use in their "4 chord" song (a song which goes through 36 hit songs without changing chord progressions) and claim all hit songs have.
6. (Humanities) In standard English, what's considered the correct punctuation to use when writing "3 am"?

Answer: 3 a.m., 3 am, 3am, 3 AM, 3 A.M. or other ways

It's worth noting that 3 a.m (with only one stop) is not correct, and neither is 3:AM. (3:00 a.m. is acceptable). A.M. is an abbreviation for the Latin phrase ante meridiem/ ante meridian, meaning prior to noon.
7. (Sci-Tech) If you're going to stay awake 'til 3 a.m. tonight, I think you should have some coffee. Which neurotransmitter does caffeine primarily affect?

Answer: Adenosine

Caffeine is able to impersonate adenosine (a neurotransmitter that acts as the brain's breaks), bind with its receptors and effectively "block" it. The coffee drinker's brain, therefore, doesn't receive signals to slow down. One cup of coffee contains about 100mg of caffeine.

After a person has ingested 400-500 mg of caffeine, the brain reaches its maximum level of alertness and speed and caffeine will have no further stimulating effect on it. Studies have shown that people who consume excessive amounts of caffeine sometimes experience hypersomnolence (tiredness and oversleeping) and lack energy.

Despite this, because it is considered an athletic performance enhancing drug, many sport competition authorities limit how much caffeine competiters are allowed to be "on" while competing.
8. (Movies) The 2014 Indian Romance/horror movie "3 am" features specimens of which supernatural creature/s? (Seeing some one dressed as one could turn you as *white* as a *sheet*)

Answer: Ghosts/spirits

The movie is directed by Visjal Mahadkar and stars Ranninjay Singh as Sunny (who narrates the story) and Anindita Nayar. It makes the point that paranormal activity exists.
9. (Religion) A church in Sydney, Australia, happened to decide to call itself "3 AM Church". Can you guess why?

Answer: "3 A.M." stands for "Three Angels Message"

The "message" of the three angels to which the church's name refers is the contained in the Bible passage of Revelation 14: 6-12. From their website, 0300.org: "3 am consists of a diverse and multicultural young Christians living in Sydney".
10. (Television) In 2016, "Animation on FOX" released a short film featuring Marge and Homer Simpson on YouTube called "3 a.m.". What was it about?

Answer: The 2016 US election. It parodied the 2008 "3am" campaign ad.

In the video, Marge and Homer watch an ad ("paid for by Americans who are really starting to miss Obama") in which Donald Trump is portrayed as a phony, irresponsible, spoilt megalomaniac. Homer pretends to have been persuaded by the ad to vote for Trump, but then is to become a Democrat.
