Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before you leave home in the morning you find you are washing your hands time after time, or checking that the cooker is off, or that you turned the lights off. What are you possibly suffering from?

Answer: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can range from a feeling of unease if you don't double check everything before you leave the house to a life crippling illness. In the most severe form the obsessions are continuous. Many sufferers are obsessed with cleanliness and will wash their hands over and over again, others have to have things arranged in a certain way on their desk or in their room. Compulsive checking that electrical items are turned off, or that doors are locked is another symptom. Sufferers generally know that the obsessions do not make sense but cannot stop.
2. The science fiction book "Time after Time" is based around time travel. Who wrote it?

Answer: Allen Appel

Published in 1985 this is the first of the books featuring time traveller Alex Balfour. This one has him travelling between modern day New York and Russia at the time of the 1917 revolution. He encounters various historical characters including Rasputin and Lenin.
3. The jazz standard "Time after Time" first appeared in which film?

Answer: "It Happened in Brooklyn" (1947)

Written by Sammy Cahn and Julie Styne this song appeared in "It Happened in Brooklyn", where it was sung by both Frank Sinatra and Katherine Grayson. It has gone on to become an American standard recorded by many artists, including Paul Anka, Shirley Bassey and Ella Fitzgerald.
4. The British/Australian comedy film "Time after Time" (1986) was based on whose book?

Answer: Molly Keane

This is a wonderful black comedy set in Ireland where four elderly, eccentric, siblings live in an old house. Their days are filled with petty squabbles and imagined slights. Into this mix comes a long lost cousin who shakes up everything.
5. Which medical drama series starring Ellen Pompeo had an episode entitled "Time after Time"?

Answer: Grey's Anatomy

This episode appeared in series 3 of "Grey's Anatomy". Meredith is fighting with her stepmother, Alex is trying to find Jane Doe's identity, Derek is after the job of Chief, and, as always, the relationships are more important than the patients.
6. Participants in the BBC Radio game "Just a Minute" have to speak for one minute on a subject without hesitation, deviation, and one other thing. If you said the same thing time after time you would be guilty of it. What is it?

Answer: Repetition

Participants in this long running and very popular panel game have to speak on a subject without hesitation, deviation or repetition. Any of the other panellists can interrupt the speaker with an accusation of any of the three at any time, and if the Chairman judges it a successful challenge they can then speak for the balance of the time, provided that they in turn are not challenged.
7. Someone who commits crimes time after time and is frequently in and out of jail is known as what?

Answer: Repeat Offender

A cycle of committing a crime, being in jail, being released, committing a crime and being sent back to jail characterises repeat offenders. Unfortunately these people seem immune to any rehabilitation or help, and quite often have spent so much time in prison that they are institutionalised and quite unable to cope with life in the outside world.
8. Repeating the same word or phrase time after time is a grammatical device used to give emphasis. What is this called?

Answer: Anaphora

This device has been used to great effect by speakers such as Martin Luther King in his "I Have A Dream" speech, and Winston Churchill who used it in "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds". The repetition of a phrase or words drives home the point and makes it more memorable.
9. The jazz standard "Time after Time" has been recorded by many artists, but Cyndi Lauper and which other songbird recorded a different song with the same title?

Answer: Eva Cassidy

"Time after Time" was released as an album track (the album bearing the same name) in 2000, four years after Eva Cassidy died. Her popularity in Britain is largely due to Terry Wogan who played "Fields of Gold" on his early morning radio show. Listeners fell in love with Eva Cassidy's pure voice, and this led to many of her recordings being re-released or released posthumously.
10. Before 1884 people found that time after time they missed their train, or bus or ship due to confusion surrounding the timetables. What happened to change this?

Answer: International Time Zones were invented

After spending a very uncomfortable night in a railway station because of misunderstandings over the time of trains, Sir Sandford Fleming organised the International Prime Meridian Conference. At this conference it was agreed that the world would be divided into 24 zones, each of 15 degrees latitude, with the time advancing one hour for each zone. Greenwich was set at zero as prime meridian.
