Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Greek letter stands for the mathematical constant 3.14, used to determine the circumference of a circle?

Answer: Pi

This mathematical constant is probably the most famous use of the letter Pi. Since Pi is an irrational number, i.e. it cannot be represented as a simple fraction, its decimal representation can be expanded indefinitely. The current record stands at 5 trillion digits.
2. Which Greek letter describes a certain landform at the mouth of a river?

Answer: Delta

The triangular shape of some estuaries earned them the name "delta". Famous river deltas are the Nile Delta (which was the first to be thus named), the Rhine Delta, the Rhône Delta, or the Mississippi Delta. Astronomers have also discovered deltas on Mars, proving that there must have been a lot of water on the planet at some point.
3. Which Greek letter, used in conjunction with "testing", refers to a pre-publication assessment of software or websites, among other things, carried out by a limited number of people outside of the programming team?

Answer: Beta

Beta-testing takes place after alpha testing (which is done by the team itself) to test user acceptance of the product. In the world of fan fiction writing, a beta reader is a fellow fan fiction author who proofreads your story before you upload it.
4. This letter represents, among other things, the golden ratio (or "divine proportion") in mathematics, art, and architecture. Which one is it?

Answer: Phi

The value of Phi is approximately 1.618. The golden ratio has fascinated people for centuries. In art and architecture, an object possessing the quality of the golden ratio is often regarded as especially pleasing to the eye.
5. The highest ranking individual in a social community of animals (and, jokingly, a person) is called the _______. Which letter goes in the blank?

Answer: Alpha

The alpha is generally the "leader" of a socially organised group of animals. Often it is the strongest male. The alpha is the first to eat and to mate.
The term "alpha male" (and, somewhat rarer, "alpha female) is also applied to humans, often in a half amused, half annoyed sort of way.
6. An English phrase meaning "not the slightest difference" or "not the smallest thing" contains which Greek letter?

Answer: Iota

The origin of this phrase can be found in the Bible: "until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law" (Mt 5:18).
7. The brightest electromagnetic events that occur in our universe are flashes of ______ rays. Which Greek letter goes in the blank?

Answer: Gamma

Gamma ray bursts, or GRBs, are beams of radiation that are released when a star collapses into a black hole. So far, no GRBs have been observed in the Milky Way. Gamma radiation is characterized by a very short wavelength.
8. Which Greek letter is traditionally associated with the concept of "ending" or "closing"?

Answer: Omega

Alpha and Omega = Beginning and End. In that sense, it is also present in Christian symbolism. Like so many other Greek letters, Omega is also used in a number of sciences, such as mathematics, physics, computer science, or sociology (where it denotes the weakest member of a hierarchy).
9. The letter Sigma (in the uppercase) is prominently featured in the Microsoft Excel toolbar. Which mathematical operation out of the following options is it associated with?

Answer: summation

The lowercase Sigma is also used in mathematics, namely for the standard deviation in statistics. Other areas of use include particle physics, biology, and economics.
10. Which of the following Greek letters is featured in the NATO (or ICAO) spelling alphabet?

Answer: None of these options are correct

Only Alpha (spelled "Alfa") and Delta are featured in the NATO Alphabet (Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta...)
