Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first room in which he quietly entered was the Geography group meeting. The Trivia Intruder made notes as they discussed the fact there is actually a sea with no coasts. What is that body of water?

Answer: Sargasso Sea

The Sargasso Sea is about 700 miles wide and 2000 miles long. The unique feature is that it has no coast! It is bounded by ocean currents, instead. To its west is the Gulf Stream Current, on its east is the Canary Current, on its north is the North Atlantic Current, and on its south is the North Atlantic Equatorial Current.

It is home to masses of seaweed. Christopher Columbus wrote about it in his journeys in the 1490s and it has been a place of wonder and legends ever since.
2. The next room the Trivia Intruder entered was one where the Sports group was meeting. He stealthily crept around and listened to their conversation. They were saying that the Seattle Seahawks (American football) team has a "Twelfth Man". Who is this?

Answer: The fans

The Seattle Seahawks fans are collectively known as the team's "Twelfth Man". This fanbase is known for their noise! In 2005, they were so loud that the New York Giants committed 11 false start penalties. When Seattle won that game, the coach dedicated the game ball to the Twelfth Man.

In 2019, Seattle settled a deal with Texas A&M to use that phrase as their trademark and the fans, who set a loud noise crowd record, have joyfully yelled ever since.
3. The Trivia Intruder headed down the hall and slipped into the next room. It was occupied by the group talking about Television topics. He was sure he heard them discussing a show that aired from 1958 to 1961 and starred Lloyd Bridges as a diver. What is it?

Answer: Sea Hunt

Lloyd Bridges starred as a former Navy diver named Mike Nelson. He and his boat, the "Argonaut", were called out for rescues or salvage operations. Bridges did not know how to scuba dive when he got the part, and by the last season he was doing all his own stunts.

He always ended the shows with an ask of viewers to protect the marine environment. He left the show after four years because the producers wanted to focus on cops-and-robbers stories, while he wanted to focus on environmental themes.
4. When the Trivia Intruder grabbed his notepad and entered the next conference room, he realized he was watching the group who dealt with Animal trivia. He hid and listened as the speaker made an announcement. "The leafy sea dragon is an excellent swimmer... just look at all those appendages!" Is this statement true or false?

Answer: False

The leafy seadragon, a cousin of the seahorse, is covered with small leaf-like appendages that help provide camouflage in seaweed and kelp. Like the seahorse, the male seadragon is in charge of the young, but they keep eggs externally on the underside of their tails. Even with all those appendages, the leafy seadragon is a very poor swimmer.

They use tiny fins to propel, steer, and turn, but they mostly drift in the ocean current.
5. The next room the Trivia Intruder crept into was one where the Hobbies group had congregated. He listened as they discussed a popular cocktail called the Sea Breeze. The people agreed that vodka and cranberry juice were essential. What was the third necessary ingredient?

Answer: Grapefruit juice

The Sea Breeze cocktail originated from a cranberry problem in the 1960s. Berries from the Pacific Northwest were found to have traces of weed killer in them and cranberry sales took a decline. Ocean Spray, a company that features cranberries, began advertising uses for it, including a cocktail with cranberry juice, grapefruit juice, and vodka.

The Savoy, in London, features a version of it with gin. The traditional Sea Breeze is usually consumed in the summertime and can even be shaken to make it foamy!
6. The Trivia Intruder headed into the next conference room. He discovered it was the group of people interested in Literature. They were doing a book club discussion of "The Old Man and the Sea" about an aging fisherman in an epic struggle with a marlin. Who wrote this novel?

Answer: Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway wrote "The Old Man and the Sea" in 1952 while in Cuba. It is about an aging fisherman named Santiago and his struggles. There are themes about friendship as he engages a young boy as his student. There are elements of 'man versus nature' as Santiago battles the ocean, a marlin, and the weather.

It contains threads of perseverance and skill and is a hotly discussed book around the world.
7. The next conference room that the Trivia Intruder crept into was where the group discussing Religion was to be found. As he quietly took notes, he heard them animatedly talking about the Bible and Moses parting the Red Sea. What book in the Bible were they discussing?

Answer: Exodus

In the Bible, Moses is chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and into the land of Canaan. The Egyptians are pursuing them as they come to the Red Sea. As Exodus 14:21 reads "Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided". Moses and the people pass safely through and the waters then return and destroy the Egyptian army.
8. The Trivia Intruder slipped into the next conference room down the hall. He found himself in the Humanities group and they were discussing myths and legends. He scribbled notes as he heard them talking about the sea monster that takes the shape of a giant squid and terrorized ships near Norway and Greenland. What was it called?

Answer: The Kraken

The Kraken is a legendary sea monster of enormous size that was said to live off the coasts of Greenland and Norway. It is said to resemble a giant squid with many strong tentacles. In some Scandinavian stories, it terrorizes ships and can drag sailors to the bottom of the ocean.

Other myths say it can cause massive whirlpools. Centuries ago, the Kraken was used to explain why ships and crews disappeared and never came home.
9. The Trivia Intruder crept into the next room. A group of people interested in Science sat around the conference table. They were discussing a process called desalination. True or False: This process can actually obtain potable water from sea water.

Answer: True

There are different techniques used in desalination processes. One is the reverse osmosis technology. Sea water is run through filters which remove suspended solids. Next, reverse-osmosis membranes separate the salts and other impurities and discharge it as brine. The leftover liquid is then conditioned where minerals or chemicals are added to ensure the water is made drinkable.
10. The Trivia Intruder reached the last set of doors. It was blocked by a member of the Brain Teasers trivia group. The guard said "since you have been to all the other rooms, you should know what one letter of the alphabet is required for entry". What is that single letter?
