Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. SCI/TECH. Which mountain is the tallest mountain on Mars and is approximately three times taller than Everest, the tallest mountain on earth (which comes in at 8848 m / 29 035 feet)?

Answer: Olympus Mons

Olympus Mons (Mount Olympus) is a volcano on Mars with a height of 22,000m or 69,000 feet, making it almost three times higher than Mt. Everest. It is a shield volcano with gentle slopes. Therefore it covers a large area, the size of Arizona or 2/3 the area of France.
2. ANIMALS: The Bald Eagle, a distinctive American symbol is not actually bald. To what does "bald" refer with this bird?

Answer: White-headed

The scientific name of the bald eagle is Haliaeetus leucocephalus which literally means "sea eagle, white head". The "bald" reference refers to an older meaning of the word meaning white-headed. This eagle is essentially brown with only the head and some tail feathers being white. With most species of eagles the female is larger than the male.

The bald eagle is both the national animal and national bird of USA.
3. HOBBIES: The Chiko Roll, an Australian invention, is a savoury cylindrical pastry filled with meat and vegetables, and is similar in appearance to which other savoury snack?

Answer: Spring Roll

The Chico Roll, an Australian cultural icon was invented in Ballarat, Victoria in 1950. It was inspired by the spring roll and the egg roll. It has chopped meat, spices, carrot, barley, celery and green beans wrapped in a thick egg and flour dough and then deep fried. The thick dough makes the roll easy to eat with one hand.

The sausage roll is claimed to be British in origin, though there is evidence something similar existed in Roman times. The British version, a sausage is wrapped in flaky or puff pastry. In Australia, it is similar but made with sausage mince wrapped in dough and baked.

There is no connection between Chiko Rolls and sausage rolls other than their popularity as snack foods at football games. A chicken roll is a chicken sandwich on a bread roll and a forward roll is not a foodstuff but an athletic exercise.
4. GEOGRAPHY: Japan is a northern Pacific Ocean island country of over 120 million inhabitants with 103 million (2012) living on Honshu, the largest island. New Zealand is a southern Pacific Ocean island country of approximately 4.4 million (2011) people spread over two main islands, North Island and South Island. How does Honshu compare in area with the two main New Zealand Islands?

Answer: Honshu is bigger than each of the NZ islands individually

In area Japan is the 62nd largest nation with 377 000 sq. km. New Zealand is the 76th biggest at 270 000 sq. km. Honshu at 230 000 km2 is the largest island in Japan and is the seventh largest island in the world and almost twice as large as each of New Zealand's South Island (12th largest overall, 146 000 sq. km) and the North Island (14th largest, 114,000 km).
5. HUMANITIES: "Trigger", "Yacht" and "Wagon" are all words that came from the which language originally?

Answer: Dutch

The English word "Trigger" "comes from the Dutch word "Trekker" meaning "to pull".

"Yacht" comes from the Dutch word, "jacht" which is short for "Jachtschip" meaning "hunting ship".

"Wagon" comes from the Dutch word "Wagen" meaning "cart" or "carriage".
6. HISTORY: Queen Victoria died before Australia could become a nation?

Answer: False

Queen Victoria died in 1901. Australia became a nation in 1901. So months become important. Queen Victoria reigned between 24 May 1837 and 22 January 1901. Australia became a federation on 1st January 1901. If Australia had become a nation on 26th January (Anniversary of the first settlement in 1788), as once proposed, King Edward VII would have overseen the birth of Australia.
7. PEOPLE: Michael Crichton was a prolific author, screenwriter and producer. In which year did two of his novels and one screenplay held the Number 1 position for television series, movie and book simultaneously?

Answer: 1994

Crichton was a prolific author with 13 of his novels being made into movies. He was writer and/or director of 12 successful movies and he was the creator of two television series, "Beyond Westworld" (1980) and "ER" (1994-2009).

He died in 2009 aged 66.

9. SPORTS: (American) football, cricket and soccer all have how many players in each side?

Answer: 11

American football, soccer and cricket all have 11 players. Canadian Football has 12 players, Rugby League 13 players, Rugby Union and Gaelic Football 15 players and Australian Rules Football 18 players,
10. WORLD. The Concorde, one of only two types of supersonic aircraft that entered commercial service, was the last British Airways plane to retain a flight engineer when the plane was retired from service in what year?

Answer: 2003

The Concorde was one of the most advanced aircraft when it was first built in 1969. Because of little competition there was no apparent need to update the aircraft much, so when it was retired in 2003 (due to the crash in Paris in 2000, decreased patronage due to 9/11 in 2001 and rising maintenance costs), it still had an analogue, not digital, cockpit and retained a flight engineer.
