Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you were to travel along the River Shannon from Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim to Killaloe, County Clare you would pass through County Offaly. The county was not always called Offaly. During English rule it was known by a different name. By what name was Offaly once known?

Answer: The King's County

Up until 1920, County Offaly was known as the King's County. During the Irish Civil War (1919-1921) the name of the county was changed to County Offaly. This was done to defy British rule. The name Offaly was chosen as a tribute to the O'Connor family clan, the principal Gaelic family situated within the county at the time.
2. Ireland is famous for producing whiskey, and Irish whiskey has being distilled in many towns the length and breadth of Ireland. One of these towns is situated in County Offaly. The whiskey that bears its name is no longer distilled there, but the distillery remains as a reminder to its origin. Which town in Offaly once distilled whiskey?

Answer: Tullamore

The whiskey to which Tullamore lent its name is Tullamore Dew, a whiskey which is drank and sold all over the world. It was first distilled in 1829 in Tullamore. Over the years, the distillery suffered financial setbacks and eventually shut down in 1963. The brand Tullamore Dew was bought by another Irish distillery in County Cork.
3. The landscape of County Offaly is quite varied: from the lowlands of the River Shannon to the bog land which can be found in the west of the county, and the lush, rich tillage land located to the north of the county. To the south of the county, one will find a small mountain range along the border of County Laois. What is the name of this mountain range?

Answer: Slieve Bloom

The Slieve Bloom Mountains spread from Roscrea in County Tipperary to Mountmellick in County Laois, and Mounthrath in County Laois to Kinnity in County Offaly. The Slieve Bloom Mountains have a mixture of rivers and streams, blanket bog and forest. The highest point on the mountain range is a point known as Arderin.

It is approximately 527m above sea level, which makes it the highest point in Laois or Offaly, but only the 400th highest point on the island of Ireland.
4. The town of Birr in the county of Offaly was not always known by this name; at one stage it was known as Parsonstown, named after Sir Laurence Parsons. Likewise, there is a town in the north of the county called Daingean; it too was once known by a different name. By what name was Daingean once known?

Answer: Philipstown

Daingean, once known as Philipstown, was named after King Philip of Spain. King Philip was the husband of Queen Mary. At one point in the history of the county, Daingean was the principal town. This changed, however, and Tullamore became the principal town of County Offaly.
5. Like many counties in Ireland, Offaly has a large collection of castles. Some are dilapidated, whereas others remain inhabited. Most famous of these castles is probably Birr Castle and demesne. There is, however, another well-known castle just on the outskirts of Tullamore. What is the name of the castle, which shares its name with a well-known town in County Cork?

Answer: Charleville

The name of the castle came from the name of the man who built the castle. Charles William Bury was the first Earl of Charleville. The castle and its grounds are open to the public all year round, and the grounds of the castle are used on an annual basis to host the Tullamore Agricultural Show. Since 2006, the grounds of the castle have also been home to a music festival known as Castlepalooza.
6. To the west of the county lies a small village called Shannonbridge, named for the bridge that crosses the River Shannon and links County Offaly with Counties Galway and Roscommon. The village is also home to an old English garrison and an electricity-generating power station. What local resource is used to fuel the power station in Shannonbridge?

Answer: Peat

Because a large area of County Offaly is covered with raised bog, the ESB and Bord Na Mona built a peat burning power station in Shannonbridge. Bord Na Mona harvested the peat from the surrounding bog land and sold the peat to the ESB, who burned it in the power station to create electricity.
7. There are two canals in existence on the island of Ireland: the Grand Canal and The Royal Canal. Which of the following statements in relation to the canals and County Offaly is correct?

Answer: Only the Grand Canal flows through the County of Offaly

The Grand Canal originates in the heart of Dublin city and flows westward until it enters the River Shannon at Shannon Harbour in County Offaly. Work began on building the canal in 1756, and its purpose was to transport raw materials from the centre of Dublin to the rest of the country via the River Shannon.

The canal was famously used by Arthur Guinness to transport his beer out of Dublin and to the rest of the country. There are 43 locks on the canal, and it is a total of 82 miles in length. The canal has primarily become a popular fishing source for coarse fishermen. Fish such as perch, pike and bream can be fished for in its waters.

The canal ceased to be used as a commercial route in 1960.
8. There are many monastic sites located in various parts of Offaly. None are more famous than Clonmacnois, situated on the banks of the River Shannon. Clonmacnois is also the last resting place of many high kings of Ireland. Who was the last high king of Ireland to be laid to rest in Clonmacnois?

Answer: Ruaidri Ua Conchobair

Ruaidri Ua Conchobair, or Rory O' Connor in its Anglicised form, was the last high king of Ireland. He ruled as High King of Ireland from 1166 to 1198. Before becoming High King, Ruaidri Ua Conchobair was King of Connaught.
9. County Offaly has a proud sporting heritage in both Gaelic football and Gaelic hurling. In the Irish sporting world, County Offaly is known as the "faithful county". What are the origins of this nickname?

Answer: It comes from the motto found on the county coat of arms

The coat of arms of County Offaly is known as the Úi Failghe, or The Faithful County coat of arms. On the coat of arms is the motto "Esto Fidelis", which roughly translates as "be you faithful". Also present on the coat of arms is a lion and a cross being upheld by the lion.

The county colours of Offaly are green, white and gold. The song associated with County Offaly is known as "The Offaly Rover".
10. Seeing as County Offaly is situated in the middle of Ireland, it is inevitable that it shares a border with quite a number of other counties. How many other counties does County Offaly share a border with?

Answer: 7

Offaly shares a border with the following counties: Westmeath, Meath, Kildare, Laois, Tipperary, Galway and Roscommon. Four of these are Leinster counties, two are Connaught counties and one is a Munster county. Sharing a border with so many counties leads to a lot of sporting rivalry between those other counties.
