Amsterdam has a number of nicknames but it is generally considered to be nicknamed the "Venice of the North" due to the number of canals that run through the city.
2. Dubrovnik (Croatia)

Answer: The Pearl of the Adriatic

The medieval city of Dubrovnik is known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic" as it sits on the brilliant blue and turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea.
3. Beijing (China)

Answer: The Forbidden City

Built during the Ming Dynasty in 1420, Beijing became known as the "Forbidden City" as it was the residence of the terrestrial Emperor. Nobody could enter or leave the Palace without the consent of the Emperor.
4. Mumbai (India)

Answer: The City of Dreams

Mumbai is the home of the Indian movie industry (Bollywood) and the financial hub of the country. The city offers numerous opportunities in many fields and is referred to as the "City of Dreams".
5. Chicago (USA)

Answer: The Windy City

The city of Chicago has in the past been known by a number of nicknames, however, the most common is "The Windy City". There have been a number of explanations as to the nickname but most common is that the city sits on the shores of Lake Michigan and it experiences cool lake breezes. Because of these breezes and the tall buildings in the city the wind is sometimes sucked down into the streets when in other parts of the city it is a relatively calm.
6. Geneva (Switzerland)

Answer: The Peace Capital

Geneva is known as the "Peace Capital" due to the presence of numerous international organisations including the United Nations and the Red Cross. It was here where the concern and treatment of wartime prisoners of war was ratified with the Geneva Convention.
7. Melbourne (Australia)

Answer: The City by the Bay

Melbourne (The City by the Bay) earned its name because it covers most of the coastline of Port Phillip Bay, which opens into Bass Strait through a narrow channel known as The Rip. Port Phillip Bay covers an area of 1,930 sq. kms with a coastline of over 264 km (164 miles).
8. Johannesburg (South Africa)

Answer: The City of Gold

Johannesburg is also known as Joburg, Jozi or "The City of Gold". This later nickname came about due to the main Witwatersrand gold reef being discovered in 1884, thus starting a gold rush in the area.
9. Budapest (Hungary)

Answer: Queen of the Danube

The capital city of Hungary, Budapest, is known as either the "Queen of the Danube" or the "Pearl of the Danube". Budapest straddles the Danube River which is the second longest river in Europe, after the Volga.
10. Las Vegas (USA)

Answer: Sin City

In 1906 the area of Las Vegas known as Block 16 became the red light area and the only area to serve liquor without licensing restrictions and also offered prostitution. Thus the city was known as "Sin City". Even during the Prohibition era the sale of illegal liquor continued in secret.
