Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While visiting the wonderful state of Maine you can visit which of the following ocean bays known for having the highest tides in the world?

Answer: Bay of Fundy

In the northeastern part of the state, tourists can visit the magnificent Bay of Fundy known for its immense tidal range. Lucky tourists may catch a glimpse of the many whales that congregate in the nutrient rich waters. There are many bed and breakfast establishments in the area and lots of historic architecture to be seen.
2. Opened in 1791, what is the name of the oldest lighthouse in the state of Maine?

Answer: Portland Head Light

Located on the southern coast of the state, the Portland Head Light can be found at Portland Harbor on the Gulf of Maine. Lamps using whale oil were the original source of lighting. By 1989 this beautiful lighthouse had become automated. The lights from this lighthouse can be seen 28 miles (44km.) out to see.

The lighthouse keeper's home has been turned into a maritime museum and is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. A visit to the Portland Head Light can be an enjoyable outing full of natural beauty and history.
3. What is thought to have created the unusual landmark known as the Desert of Maine?

Answer: Soil erosion caused by a failure to rotate crops

Located in the southern part of the state, the Desert of Maine is only 40 acres in size. It is not beach type sand, but rather a type of glacial silt that was originally created by glacial activity. It came to the surface when the landowners did not rotate crops, causing the top layer of soil to erode away.

As the top soil blew away, a dune of this fine silt came to the top and there is now a small 'desert' in the middle of one of the beautiful forests that Maine is known for.
4. On July 4th, 1866, the largest city in Maine was devastated by a huge fire that left many thousands homeless. Which city is depicted in this lithograph?

Answer: Portland

On the first Independence Day after the American Civil War was over, the city of Portland, Maine, caught fire. At the time, it was the greatest fire to have occurred in the U.S. Very few people were killed, but large portions of the city were burnt to the ground. Over 10,000 people were left homeless and almost 2,000 buildings were lost. Thankfully this occurred in the middle of summer. Had this occurred in the middle of winter, the death toll would have been much, much higher.

The city has suffered three more fires and managed to rebuild itself.

This city has completely recovered, and the city seal fittingly depicts a phoenix rising from the ashes.
5. Which of these unique bridges would you be able to visit while touring the lovely state of Maine?

Answer: Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory

The Penobscot Narrows Bridge crosses the Penobscot River and connects Prospect, Maine with Verona Island. It is home to the tallest public observatory located on a bridge. From the top of the tower you are able to see the river below, the Fort Knox State Historic Site, and the large Penobscot Bay. It is open to the public from the first of May until Halloween in October.
6. What should you expect to see if you decide to visit the Bath Iron Works?

Answer: Ship building

The Bath Iron Works are one of the largest shipyards in North America. Founded in 1884, it has been building both private, commercial and military vessels for well over a century. Located on the Kennebec River, near the city of Bath, this is a location that many people will find fascinating.

The construction of large ships takes a special skill set. While I might not recommend it for small children, if you are looking for somewhere new to go, and something unusual to see, this just might be the spot for your next daytrip!
7. Fort William Henry near New Harbor, Maine, is location of archeological excavations and a historical museum. It was used in the filming of which of the following 1999 Kevin Costner films?

Answer: Message in a Bottle

Originally built in 1692, this American Revolution-era fort is a popular tourist destination. The original fort was destroyed in 1696 during the King William's War but was reconstructed using the original stones around 1908. It is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Native American chief Taukolexis who was hanged from a tree near the fort the same year the fort was destroyed.

The historical museum that can be toured is full of daily items from the 17th and 18th century village that was originally part of this location.

The romantic drama "Message in a Bottle" (1999) did a lot filming at this location, taking advantage of the picturesque panoramic view.
8. Which one of these national parks can you visit while touring the lovely state of Maine?

Answer: Acadia National Park

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Maine is Acadia National Park. It is open year-round, weather permitting, and features 125 miles of hiking trails, plus carriage roads, kayaking, fishing, canoeing and swimming. This beautiful park features camping areas with fantastic cliff-side overlooks. Acadia National Park was the first national park east of the Mississippi River.
9. Maine is home to the northern-most city in the entire United States.

Answer: False

Hopefully you did not forget the huge state of Alaska. Maine does not contain the northern-most point in the U.S., but it does contain the eastern-most location on the mainland. Quoddy Head State Park is located near Lubec, Maine, and is home to beautiful forests and the striking West Quoddy Head Light.

The coast in this area is full of dangerous cliffs and rocks, and many ships have gone down in this area. A visit to this location enables a tourist to see many of Maine's finest landscapes.
10. Which American author, known for his work in the macabre, makes his home in this unusual home in Maine, as well as setting many of his works in this state?

Answer: Stephen King

Located in Bangor, Maine, behind wrought ironing fencing is the beautiful Stephen King house. Known for a century as the William Arnold House, this house was built in 1858 and is rumored to be the home of a ghost as well as the author Stephen King and his wife.

The wrought iron fencing is decorated with bats, spiders and spider webs. This is a private residence and no tours are allowed, but for those who love Stephen King and his works, no trip to Bangor is complete without driving or walking by this unique house.
