Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is it called when one plate is forced under another?

Answer: subduction

It CAUSES friction but is called subduction. It is the heat and force of the friction which causes the molten rock to rise.
2. What is the molten rock material under the earth's crust known as?

Answer: magma

Only when it is spewed out in an eruption is it called lava.
3. Where is the molten rock stored whilst underground?

Answer: magma chamber

The main vent is where the magma comes out when there is an eruption. If this vent gets blocked, a secondary vent is formed.
4. What is the term for a river of hot gases and rocks which can travel at over 200mph down the side of a volcano?

Answer: pyroclastic flow

It is extremely hot and can travel at astonishing speeds, even up to 400 mph. You have no chance of survival. Mantle plume, caldera and lava dome are other terms associated with volcanoes.
5. On which part of the plate do volcanoes and earthquakes usually appear?

Answer: plate boundaries

They are also known as fault lines. One of the most famous fault lines is San Andreas fault in San Francisco, California. There could be a huge eruption at any time.
6. Volcanic eruptions can continue for years.

Answer: True

Some can last for decades. The majority of volcanoes don't just erupt once then go back to sleep, they carry on, which is what makes them so dangerous.

Answer: True

Extinct means no longer erupting and active means that it's erupting at this very moment. Dormant means it could erupt.
8. There are some active volcanoes in Britain.

Answer: False

There are some extinct volcanoes in Britain. Snowdon is a small extinct volcano in Wales and Edinburgh Castle is sitting on top of a plugged volcano. There are no dormant or active ones though!
9. On which plate is Britain located?

Answer: Eurasian plate

The Eurasian is a very large plate, though not the largest.
10. What are people who study volcanoes called?

Answer: vulcanologists
