Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ASA was born in Scotland before emigrating to Australia and found that April the eleventh in the year of his birth was found to be the most boring day of the twentieth century. Can you tell me what year this was? This is also the year when Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio got married.

Answer: 1954

Three hundred million facts were fed into a computerized search engine and not a single newsworthy item or the birth or death of any notable person happened on April 11, 1954. The DiMaggios' marriage only lasted until October.
2. TimTamMan was born in 1941 in Timmins, a Northern Ontario gold mining town. During the previous year (1940) many excellent movies were produced. Which film won the 1941 Best Oscar for Film of the Year?

Answer: Rebecca

"Rebecca" (1940) was based on the popular Daphne du Maurier novel and starred Joan Fontaine (a childlike bride), Laurence Olivier (her weird widower husband) and a mad housekeeper, who played by Judith Anderson. This was the 13th Academy Awards and honoured the films that were seen during the year 1940. It is interesting to note that this was the first year that envelopes were used and the phrase "May I have the envelope, please" entered the Academy Awards lexicon.

As well, this was the first year that the company of Price Waterhouse was charged with counting the ballots.

A new beginning for the movie industry and for me, a newborn babe.
3. Whitney37's birthday is September 23, 1937. On May 6, 1937, the German airship Hindenburg caught fire as it was attempting to land in New Jersey. Where did this disaster occur?

Answer: Lakehurst, New Jersey

As the Hindenburg air ship was approaching the Lakehurst, New Jersey mooring mast, it caught fire and crashed. On board were 36 passengers and 16 crew. The death toll came to 36 including 13 passengers, 22 crew and 1 person on the ground.
4. Liz5050 was born in 1957, the year that an iconic toy was first produced by the Wham-O company. I wish my dog could catch one. Can you name this toy?

Answer: Frisbee

Today there are many ways to enjoy your Frisbee, with or without a canine companion. And one should never throw a lawn dart for a dog.
5. Our "head" quiz writer (well, at least for this team quiz!) is Blindlady-27. No, she wasn't born in the year AD27 - but some days she does feel that way! No, 1951 was year of her birth. During this year, a science fiction film was released including the now famous words, "Klaatu barada nikto." What was the name of this film?

Answer: The Day the Earth Stood Still

"The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) (not to be confused with the 2008 remake) starred Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Billy Gray, Hugh Marlowe, and Sam Jaffe. Rennie played a visitor from outer space who had come to Earth to warn its inhabitants about their aggressive behavior.

In order to make his point, the space man stopped all electricity, all over the world, for a period of ten minutes - the earth literally stood still. The quote in the body of the question, "Klaatu barada nikto" refers to the phrase Michael Rennie taught to Patricia Neal so that the robot in the film would not harm her.
6. Skyflyerjen was born in 1984, the same year Washington and Los Angeles played in Super Bowl XVIII. LA won, but perhaps a certain advertisement is more widely known. What iconic brand delivered a memorable commercial?

Answer: Apple

Yes, it was Apple introducing their new Macintosh computer. The iconic "1984" commercial was similar to the famous novel by George Orwell. In it, a woman stops "Big Brother" by throwing her sledgehammer at the screen where he appears.
It was directed by Ridley Scott and is considered one of the best commercials of all time.
7. Mark1970 was born in 1970 (duh!). During this year, a momentous break-up also occurred that shook the music world as well as the hearts of so many young females on the planet. What musical group disbanded in 1970?

Answer: The Beatles

Having conquered much of the world by 1964, John, Paul, George and Ringo (aka the Beatles) disbanded in April, 1970 after Paul McCartney announced that he was leaving the band. "Let It Be" (released May 8, 1970) was the group's final album.
8. The lone squirrel on our team, CeCe1952 was born in 1952! Don't we all have such complicated user names? Anyway, a toy, still popular today, was introduced during May of 1952. It required the use of produce to achieve its complete effect. What toy was released in 1952 that was created by George Lerner?

Answer: Mr. Potato Head

Mr. Potato came with plastic face and body pieces that were to be placed on real vegetables. It was also the first toy to be advertised on television. During its first year of being available, it sold over one million sets. Today you can still buy and play with Mr. Potato Head - and Mrs. Potato Head, too!
9. Our fearless leader, Smudger was born on March 24, 1958 which just happens to also be the date that Elvis Aaron Presley joined the United States Army. What rank did Elvis attain before being officially discharged on March 5, 1960?

Answer: Sergeant

Elvis Aaron Presley attained the rank of sergeant during his time in the army. He left active duty at Fort Dix, New Jersey, on March 5, 1960. He remained as a reservist until his final discharge on March 23, 1964.
10. In 2011, a group of displaced quizzers who wanted somewhere to be together formed a new team. Since many of us had wandered here and there through our time on Fun Trivia, we felt it was fitting that our team reflected the nomadic nature of our group. What new (and absolutely fabulous and wonderfully outstanding) Fun Trivia team came into being in 2011?

Answer: Wandering Quizzers

2011 was another important year in the history of our old world. Osama bin Laden was killed, Kate and William got married and an earthquake/tsunami hit Japan. In addition, LOL (laugh out loud) and OMG (oh my God) were officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary. "The King's Speech" (2010) won the Oscar for best film of the year.

*And*, many wandering quiz players found a new home with the Wandering Quizzers!
