1. Who was the French king that ruled during the time of the French Revolution?

Answer: King Louis XVI

King Louis XVI ruled France from 1774 until his death by the guillotine in 1793. King Louis XIV ruled France from 1643 to 1715 - a good 74 years before the Revolution. Neither Turgot nor Necker was ever king.
2. When were the Estates-General held?

Answer: May 1789

Louis XVI called a meeting of the Estates-General, which had once been a French parliament (of sorts) in order, he hoped, to help solve France's financial crisis. It had last met in 1614 and there was much uncertainty about quite basic matters like procedure. (Note. In French the Estates-General are called "Les Etats-Généraux).
3. The Estates-General consisted of how many different estates?

Answer: 3

The estates-general consisted of 3 different estates. It consisted of the First Estate which were the clergy. The Second Estate were the nobles, and the Third Estate consisted of everyone else.
4. When the king closed the Salle des États, where the National Assembly met, where did they move to?

Answer: The Tennis Court

On June 20, 1789 King Louis XVI closed the Salle des États so the National Assembly could not meet. They then decided to move to the indoor tennis court where they then proceeded to take the Tennis Court Oath. It was an oath that stated they would not split up until they had given France a constitution.
5. On July 14, 1789 insurgents stormed and captured what famous prison?

Answer: The Bastille

On July 14, 1789 insurgents stormed the Bastille. Much of Paris started an open rebellion after King Louis banished the reformist minister Necker and completely reconstructed the ministry. The insurgents however only released seven prisoners.
6. In what year was the French Constitution written?

Answer: 1791

King Louis XVI, who was previously removed from his throne, was reinstated and accepted the new constitution by writing "I undertake to maintain it at home, to defend it from all attacks from abroad, and to cause its execution by all the means it places at my disposal".
7. The French Revolutionary Wars started in 1792 when France declared war on what country?

Answer: Austria

France fought against Austria and later also Britain, Spain, Prussia, Russia, and Sardinia. On 20 April 1792 France started the French Revolutionary Wars by declaring war on Austria as it had been secretly negotiating with Louis XVI. France went on to win the war.
8. How was King Louis put to death?

Answer: Guillotine

On January 21, 1793 King Louis XVI was executed by the guillotine for treason. Months later his wife, Marie Antoinette, was killed by the same method.
9. The Reign of Terror was controlled by whom specifically?

Answer: The Committee of Public Safety

The Committee of Public Safety soon came under the influence of Maximilien Robespierre. Estimates of the number of pople killed in the Reign of Terror of range from about 18,500 to 40,000.
10. At the end of the French Revolution who became the new leader of France?

Answer: Napoleon Bonaparte

On 9 November 1799 ("18 Brumaire", year VIII in the revolutionary calendar) Napoleon Bonaparte seized power in a coup d'état and became the ruler of France as First Consul. In 1804 he proclaimed himself Emperor and crowned himself at Notre Dame in Paris. He ruled until 1814 and then briefly again 1815.
