Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After Fredericksburg, Hooker led an army across the Rappahannock and Rapidan Rivers on a campaign to turn the Confederate left flank. How many men (approximately) did Hooker have under his command?

Answer: 130,000

By the end of the battle the Union had lost somewhere around 14,000 of these men.
2. We all know that Lt. General T.J. Jackson of the Confederacy was accidently shot by his own men and later died. Who took temporary command of Jackson's Corps after Jackson had been shot?

Answer: J.E.B. Stuart

Jackson had been making a night reconnaissance when he was shot. His men thought he was Union cavalry.
3. The Battle at Chancellorsville was considered Lee's greatest victory, but at the same time, was Major-General Joseph Hooker's plan the best chance of the war to defeat Lee for the first time?

Answer: Yes

A major reason why Hooker lost the battle was because of Union General John Sedgwick's leadership, which left a lot to be desired. Sedgwick was supposed to break through at Fredericksburg and attack Lee's rear. Hooker also had a difficult time communicating with Howard on his right flank due to the dense forest around Chancellorsville. Hooker's message to dig in apparently did not get through or Howard ignored it, and when Howard's corps collapsed Hooker did not know what had happened until his own men came fleeing towards him. From then on it was a nightmarish domino effect for the Union army.
4. Which of these Union leaders was NOT at Chancellorsville?

Answer: George Custer

Meade saw little action, Howards corps was shattered by Jackson's famous flanking attack, and Couch was Hooker's second in command. When Hooker was injured he continued to command instead of allowing Couch to take over. This injury made it more or less impossible to command and may explain further defeat throughout the rest of the battle.
5. On what days did the battle take place?

Answer: May 1-5

This includes fighting around Chancellorsville as well as the second battle of Fredericksburg. There were an estimated 30,000 American casualties when both sides' losses were added up.
6. What did Lincoln say when he heard of the Union defeat?

Answer: "My God, what will the people say?"

Hooker had promised Lincoln a victory but came back with a defeat.
7. What battle was Hooker NOT a part of?

Answer: First Bull Run

He watched the battle of 1st Bull Run as a civilian, having failed to gain a commission in the army.
8. How many men did Lee leave at Fredericksburg before marching towards Chancellorsville?

Answer: 9,000

These men were to watch over the Union forces in Fredericksburg.
9. How many men did Jackson take on his daring 12-mile march across the Union front to attack the exposed Union western flank?

Answer: 26,000

This attack is considered the most famous flanking maneuver of the war.
10. How was Hooker injured during Chancellorsville?

Answer: Concussion.

This was especially bad news because Hooker had not told anyone his plan. So when he suffered the concussion, the only one who knew what was going on was taken out of the battle. Soon after, the army became disorganized and retreated.
