After the War he was granted a commission as a colonel in the regular army.

Meredith's horse fell on him distorting his leg. He would not return to the army until October of 1863, and he only commanded the brigade for one day before being sent to Illinois.

Berdan was promoted to command of the second brigade (1st divison of the 3rd corps) after Gen. Daniel Sickles was wounded.
