Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What name was Crazy Horse given at birth?

Answer: 'In the Wilderness'

Pronounced CHA-O-HA in Lakota, it means 'at one with nature'.
'Curly' or 'Light Hair' was the nickname given to him by his mother as he had light curly hair like his mother, 'Worm' or 'Waglula' is the name his father took after passing down the name 'Crazy Horse' to his son (Tasunka Witko - 'his horse is crazy').
2. To which of the 'Oceti Sakowin' ('Seven Fires of Council') did Crazy Horse belong?

Answer: 'Oglala' (Dust Scatterers)

Prior to European contact, the 'Oglala Lakota' belonged to a Native American population calling themselves 'Oceti Sakowin'(from 'Oceti', 'fireplace or stove' and 'Sakowin', which means 'seven'). The others are: 'Sihasapa' or Blackfeet, 'Itazipco' or Sans Arc ('Without Bows') and 'Oohenupa' ('Two Kettles'). After 1640, the Seven Fireplaces were more commonly known as the Sioux.
3. Crazy Horse fell in love with a young woman whose uncle was ...?

Answer: 'Red Cloud'

Black Buffalo Woman was the niece of 'Red Cloud' and, at Red Cloud's insistence, married another man, much to Crazy Horse's dismay. All others were well respected chiefs and warriors.
4. Who was Black Buffalo Womans' first husband?

Answer: 'No Water'

'No Water' was a member of Red Cloud's band, 'The Bad Faces'. Black Buffalo Woman leaves him to be with Crazy Horse. Little Hawk was Crazy Horses'little brother (or cousin, depending on the source). 'American Horse' was Red Cloud's son-in-law.
5. Discovering that his wife has left him for Crazy Horse, Black Buffalo Woman's husband tracks them down, shoots and kills her.

Answer: False

'No Water' shot Crazy Horse in the face and ran for his life. The bullet entered under his left nostril and shattered his jaw. They say that 'No Water' was so concerned about retaliation that he ran the horse to death.
6. The shooting of Crazy Horse caused such a scandal that 'No Water' was forced to leave the tribe.

Answer: False

It caused a major scandal, but 'No Water' was not asked to leave. He gave Crazy Horse three horses and his wife went back to him. Crazy Horse also lost his status as a shirt-wearer in the tribe for putting his own interests before those of the tribe.
7. Crazy Horse was so distressed by the loss of Black Buffalo Woman that he never married again.

Answer: False

He actually married again twice - 'Black Shawl' around 1871 and a half Cheyenne woman named Nellie Laravie around 1877.
8. 'Black Shawl' gave birth to Crazy Horse's only child. What was she called?

Answer: 'They Are Afraid of Her'

'They Are Afraid of Her' was named for her great-aunt. She died at the age of two or three, probably from cholera. Crazy Horse was, of course, devastated.
9. Crazy Horse's birth mother dies when he was very young (maybe four or five). He was raised by his father, stepmothers and aunts. What was his mothers' name?

Answer: 'Rattling Blanket Woman'

'White Cow' was his maternal grandmother, 'Kills Enemy' and 'Iron Between Horns' were his stepmothers. (They were also sisters).
10. Crazy Horse was an Oglala, (one of the seven bands of the Lakota people), but the Oglala consists of many smaller bands. To which of these did Crazy Horse belong?

Answer: Hunkpatila -"Heads of Circle"

The Hunkpatila later changed their name to Payabya ("to cause to go forward" or "pushed aside"), quite possibly because of an ongoing battle with Red Clouds' band (from around 1864-1874), in which they were almost wiped out.
