Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Custer chose to engage the hostiles on the 25th of June. What was his primary reason for not waiting for reinforcements?

Answer: he believed his command had been discovered

Custer decided to engage the hostiles on the 25th without support because lead elements of his command had been discovered by Indian scouts. Knowing that the Indians tended to scatter upon discovery, he decided to attack. In actuality, they did not report the presence of army troopers.
2. Custer was offered additional cavalry support before leaving Fort Abraham Lincoln. Why did he decline this support?

Answer: he believed the 7th was able to handle the job without help

Custer declined the offer of five additional companies of regular cavalry from the 2nd Cavalry as well as a battalion of mounted militia of volunteers because he believed the 7th was able to accomplish the mission without additional support. This led to the belief that Custer wanted credit for engaging the hostiles and winning the battle without help.
3. Custer was also offered a battery of Gatling guns before departing on his expedition. Why did he decline this offer?

Answer: he believed the battery would impede his march

Custer declined an offer of a battery of Gatling guns because he believed the guns would impede his march. If he had taken them they would have saved his regiment - not because of their firepower but because they would have slowed his march causing him to arrive at least two days later.
4. Major Reno and Captain Benteen were Custer's two senior officers. How did they get along with him?

Answer: both disliked him intensely

Both Major Reno and Captain Benteen both thoroughly disliked Custer and his clique. By today's standards, all three or more would have been relieved and not allowed on a vital and hazardous mission with that much animosity in the air.
5. What well tried military doctrine did Custer ignore at Little Big Horn?

Answer: not dividing command

You never divide your command in the face of superior numbers in hostile territory. Custer was aware of the size of the Indian village and still attacked them.
6. Which carbine were the troopers of the 7th using at the Little Bighorn?

Answer: the Springfield

Troopers in the 7th were using the Model 1873 Springfield. The single shot Springfield had a much slower rate of fire than the Winchester and Henry rifles that the Indians were using.
7. How did the Indians frighten off the 7th's horses during the battle?

Answer: by waving blankets

The Indians were able to frighten off the horses of dismounted troopers by waving blankets. The stampeded horses not only insured the soldiers had no means of escape, but some also carried away badly needed spare ammunition.
8. Last Stand Hill is not where the battle ended. Where were the remnants of Custer's command slain?

Answer: in a deep ravine

The final charge led by Crazy Horse routed the remains Custer's command. Twenty eight of Custer's men who fled were found in a deep ravine 400 yards from Last Stand Hill. The testimony of the Indians verify this and later archaeological evidence affirmed it.
9. What is believed to be the last spoken words of Custer going into the battle?

Answer: 'Hurrah boys,we've got them!"

Custer was heard to say,'Hurrah boys,we've got them!' by trooper Martin as five companies attacked the Indian village.Trooper Martin is also confirmed as the last soldier to have seen Custer alive.
10. When was Custer killed during the battle of Little Bighorn?

Answer: no one can say for sure

No one can say with a hundred percent certainty when Custer was slain. His body was found on Last Stand Hill beside his brother, Tom and 60 troopers from F Company. Some believe he was killed early which explains why his command fell apart so quickly.

He was found with wounds in both his skull and chest, both would have been fatal. The head wound could have been a coupe de grace, but no one can know for sure.
