In 90 BC an alliance of Italian states rose up in open revolt against the might of Rome. At Fucine Lake, they had already smashed a consular army under Cato, but at Asculum it was not to be ... Some 75,000 Romans decisively defeated a 60,000-strong rebel army and the Social War ended.

Answer: Battle of Orchomenus; First Mithridatic War

Having defeated a Mithridatic force at Chaeronea, Sulla made for Thessaly to meet consul Flaccus. However, an enormous fleet with 80,000 Mithridatic troops had landed at Chalcis to reinforce Archelaus. There, they fought the Battle of Orchomenus. Most of the battle was fought for a trench that Sulla had ordered his troops to dig.

Despite repeated attacks by Archelaus' troops, they could not conquer the trench, and in the last such attack, Sulla finally managed to rout them.

Due much to the arrival of Pompey and Lucullus, Spartacus was trapped by three gargantuan Roman armies. He made his last stand at Silarus River but was killed in battle. The 6,000 surviving slaves were crucified by Crassus' legions.

In 58 BC Caesar was at the head of six Roman legions and some auxiliaries. However, the Helvetii still had the numerical advantage. Due much to the superior quality of the Roman soldiers and Caesar's skill, the Romans managed to force the Helvetii into surrender after the battle of the Arar and Bibracte.

At the battle of Vosges, shortly after the Helvetii had capitulated, Caesar routed a Germanic army almost twice the size of his own. At Pharsalus, Pompey had superior cavalry. Knowing his disadvantage, Caesar hides a small Roman army behind his cavalry. When the Pompeian cavalry broke through Caesar's horsemen as expected, the former were surprised by the sudden appearance of a Roman army. Hence, the combined forces managed to flank Pompey and push him back, gaining a crucial victory.
