Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This author was the first to write about Manifest Destiny, or the right to expand in America.

Answer: John O' Sullivan

"Manifest Destiny" prompted many Americans to move farther west and claim territory they believed was rightfully theirs. It went hand in hand with a sense of cultural and moral superiority. The prospect of expanding the number of slave states also piqued the interest of Southerners.
2. Which type of literature would the South NOT be opposed to?

Answer: "Sociology for the South" by George Fitzhugh

"Sociology for the South" was published in 1854. Fitzhugh, a pro-slavery author, argued that factory workers in the North were more like slaves than actual slaves in the South who, he believed, lived happily.
3. Henry Clay's Compromise of 1850 included everything EXCEPT:

Answer: dividing the Nebraska Territory.

The compromise was both appreciated and reviled. There was Northern opposition to the Fugitive Slave Law that stated any escaped slave captured must be returned to his/her master.
4. The Dred Scott case concluded that:

Answer: the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, and slaves weren't citizens.

Dred Scott was a slave who was taken with his owner to the free state of Wisconsin. He argued that being on free soil made him free as well. The Supreme court thought differently. Also, due to Dred Scott being a slave, it ruled that he had no right to bring the case.
5. The Kansas-Nebraska Act brought about the creation of which new political party that included Free-Soilers, Whigs and Democrats who opposed slavery expansion?

Answer: Republican

The Republicans wanted to stop the spread of slavery, not to end slavery itself. An attempt to end slavery would only divide the North and South even more, which could result in a civil war, something they wanted to avoid.
6. What bill asked for the prohibition of slavery in the territories gained after the Mexican War?

Answer: Wilmot Proviso

Though it didn't pass, this increased tension between the North and South. This was because slavery and its expansion was a big issue that divided the North and South. The Wilmot Proviso wanted to prohibit slavery in the new territories, a major problem for the South.
7. All these were abolitionists except for:

Answer: William Walker

Walker was an adventurer and slavery enthusiast. During the "Manifest Destiny" fervor in 1855, Nicaragua was taken by Walker and his southern followers in order to create a pro-slavery territory in Central America. This failed, and Walker was executed.
8. Stephen A. Douglas created the Kansas-Nebraska Act which divided the Nebraska Territory in order to build a transcontinental railroad. Which of the following was NOT an effect of the act?

Answer: The Fugitive Slave Law was repealed.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act upset many things, including the balance between free and slave states. The violence that occurred in the territory was called "Bleeding Kansas".
9. The election of which president finally made the southern states secede?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln was a Republican who was against slavery expansion. This was a belief that threatened the South, prompting them to not want to be a part of the same country.
10. Who is not correctly paired with his/her event, person or thing?

Answer: Henry Clay - Crittenden Compromise

The Crittenden Compromise was proposed by John Crittenden, a last attempt to stop southern secession. It proposed to let territories south of the Missouri Compromise line hold slaves. Lincoln did not approve of the proposal, and it did not pass.
