Virginia Woolf's mother passed away when she was 13 years old. This led to the first of many depressive episodes for her. On March 28, 1941, she left a suicide note for her husband, filled the pockets of an overcoat with rocks, and walked into the River Ouse near her home to commit suicide.

Charles Manson was the leader of what some believe was a cult in California. During the late 1960s, his followers committed nine murders in Southern California. They were arrested, and although he declared that he hadn't actually killed anyone, he was tried for murder along with those who had actually completed the acts.

The justice system accepted that Manson had ordered the killings, so he should be charged for the murders. The trial against Manson and three of his women followers started in July, 1970.

It lasted 22 weeks, with the convictions occurring on January 25, 1971. Manson was found guilty and sentenced to death, but that sentence was later commuted to life in prison. Manson died in prison on November 19, 2017.

He is honoured each year when people around the world sing "Auld Lang Syne" during New Year's celebrations. They may not know it, but they are singing a lyric that Burns wrote in 1788.
