He surrendered the Army on April 9, 1865, but some of his soldiers continued fighting till June 1865. This is generally treated as an extremely serious matter.

He surrendered his Army to Gen. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Palm Sunday 1865. Grant was late for his meeting with Lee and arrived with no sword, wearing the dirty blouse of a private and the straps of a Lieutenant-General. He greeted Lee and they talked about their service during the Mexican War. Grant wrote out the surrender terms which let the the CSA men keep their side arms and horses and mules.

He also sent rations for Gen. Lee's army.

It consists of about 3,000 acres of land, contains more than 90 period buldings and 1,300 monuments. It also has the retirement home of President Eisenhower.

President Lincoln gave his famous "Gettysburg Address" on November 19, 1863, as a brief introduction to the ceremomies dedicating the soldiers' cemetery at Gettysburg. Edward Everett was the principal speaker that day and gave a 2 hour speech. President Lincoln was only invited as a courtesy, but he accepted beacuse he was waiting for an appropriate opportinity to express his thoughts on the Union's purpose in the war.

His famous speech lasted about 3 minutes, while that of the main speaker has been almost completely forgotten.
7. What fort was fired on in 1861, thus starting the Civil War?

Answer: Fort Sumter

The first shot was fired on April 12, 1861 at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, so starting the war. Fort Duquesne was the French name for Pittsburgh when it was under French rule - till 1763.
8. What was Union Gen. U. S. Grant's first given name at his birth?

Answer: Hiram

Although best known as Ulysses Simpson Grant, his given name at birth was Hiram Ulysses Grant. There are at least two differring accounts of the reasons for his change of name. When he was enrolled at West Point his name was mistakenly entered as Ulysses.

The error in the enrollment was made by someone mistook the middle name for Grant's mother's maiden name. Another story was that he altered it himself in order to avoid the initials "HUG".

The capital was Richmond, Virginia until it was captured in April 1865 when President Davis moved to Danville, Virginia, where the last capital was established.
