Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which confederate general led armies into Kentucky in 1862?

Answer: Braxton Bragg

Henry W. Halleck was a Union general. Joseph E. Johnston was wounded and replaced by Robert E. Lee near Richmond, Virginia. Braxton Bragg was the commander of the C.S.A army of Tennessee.
2. Which battle was the most severe battle that Kentucky faced during the Civil War?

Answer: Perryville

Perryville was the most severe battle in Kentucky. You could have identified this by elimination. The battle of Corinth happened shortly before the battle of Perryville, in Corinth, Mississippi. The battle of Albany never happened, Albany is in New York, and the armies of the C.S.A never made it up into northern New York. Gettysburg happened in Pennsylvania a bit later in the war.
3. The most severe battle that Kentucky faced during the Civil War - which Union general was guarding Kentucky at that time?

Answer: Don Carlos Buell

Jefferson Davis was the Confederate president, not a general. Buell was in charge of those troops. Halleck had been removed to command all Union armies, and Grant was in Corinth, Mississippi.
4. Which state had the Confederate Capital before the upper south seceded?

Answer: Alabama

Tennessee and North Carolina were in the upper south, Virginia was too, but after Virginia seceded, the capital was moved from Alabama to Virginia, but before it was moved, the capital was Montgomery, Alabama.
5. Which of these slave states did NOT leave the Union?

Answer: Delaware

Maine was not a slave state. Florida and Virginia seceded, but Delaware, a slave state, did not.
6. Which triplet of states were slave states in the Union during the Civil War?

Answer: Delaware, Maryland, and Kentucky

Delaware, Maryland, and Kentucky were slave states that did not secede. Colorado, Idaho, and Wyoming were not in the Union, neither were Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina. Maine, New York, and Michigan were not slave states.
7. Which of these states did NOT secede?

Answer: Maryland

Maryland was the only state on this list that did not secede. Maryland was a slave state, though. Union armies were keeping secessionists from voting to stay or leave the Union. Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee were all Confederate states.
8. In which state was Abraham Lincoln born?

Answer: Kentucky

Lincoln was born in Kentucky, but later moved to Illinois. He is buried in Springfield, Illinois.
9. Which of these four states was in the Deep South?

Answer: South Carolina

South Carolina was the only one from this set that was a Deep South state. Deep South were all states that bordered the gulf of Mexico, and Georgia, and South Carolina.
10. Which two Union states had stars on the confederate flag?

Answer: Kentucky and Missouri

Kentucky and Missouri were the only Union states on the Confederate flag. They were because secessionists voted in a fake 'secession convention'.
