Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1920s German economic conditions. Opposition to the Treaty of Versailles. Opposition to the Weimar Republic. Which of the events below had these clues as major influences?

Answer: Adolf Hitler's rise to power

The worldwide Great Depression caused banks to fail and foreclose on homes. Paper fortunes disappeared overnight, businesses closed and no jobs were to be had. The Conditions during the 1920s in Germany caused Adolf Hitler to join the nascent Nazi Party and take control of German politics by 1933. His policies led to World War II and the Holocaust.
2. Vera Lynn recorded in 1939. World War II song. Lyrics: "Who knows where, who knows when?" Which song do these clues fit?

Answer: We'll Meet Again

All of the above were Vera Lynn vehicles but only "We'll Meet Again" expressed the longing for those from whom folks were separated by the war, and the faith that they would eventually return. The song was used as a comic foil to nuclear disaster in "Dr. Strangelove", a 1964 movie.

"And I will just say hello
To the folks that you know
Tell them you won't be long
They'll be happy to know
That, as I saw you go
You were singing this song

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
Some sunny day"
3. He became President of the United States when predecessor died in office. Approved construction of hydrogen bomb. Ordered use of atomic bomb in 1945. To which man do these clues refer?

Answer: Harry S Truman

Harry S Truman took office upon Roosevelt's death, approved the release of A-bombs over Japan and the construction of the H-bomb.
4. Swinging Sixties crime lord(s). Amateur boxer(s). Nightclub owner(s).

Answer: The Kray twins

Reggie and Ronnie Kray gave £100 once to an organization that was helping the families of miners killed in a cave-in at Aberfan, Wales. That was their only recorded act of good. Frank Sinatra hired 18 body guards from the boys whilst they were locked up.
5. National Guard action on a northern Ohio campus. Four dead. Nine injured. What controversial happening took place on May 4, 1970?

Answer: The Kent State Massacre

The Kent State Massacre was the culmination of four days of demonstrations and turmoil over U.S. involvement in the Vietnam and Cambodia wars. During rioting, Ohio's National Guard were called in to keep order. On May 4, Guardsmen began shooting live rounds into the crowd of student protesters, who had earlier thrown rocks at the Guardsmen. Four students were killed by their bullets.
6. The 25th Amendment to the Constitution. Used first in 1973. Congressman Gerald Ford. How and why was it applied?

Answer: To make Ford the Vice-President upon Spiro Agnew's resignation from that office

Gerald Ford had the unusual distinction of being the first person to be made Vice President under the terms of the 25th Amendment when Spiro Agnew was forced to resign on October 10, 1973. Mr. Agnew was caught evading taxes on the unreported income he obtained from bribes. Gerald Ford was also the first person to succeed a President who resigned. Mr. Nixon resigned his office in 1974 due to his part in the Watergate scandal. Gerald Ford uniquely filled both offices without being elected to either.
7. Year the United States boycotts the Summer Olympics in Moscow. Israel and Egypt establish diplomatic relations. John Lennon is assassinated. What year did these events take place.

Answer: 1980

The U.S. supported the Mujahedeen rebel tribesmen in the Soviet-Afgan war. Some of them later later became hijackers and anti-American terrorists under Osama bin Laden.

In 1983, U.S. military forces led the invasion of Grenada, a nation of some 90,000 people. The war was over in weeks with victory going to the invading countries.

1986 saw Space Shuttle "Challenger" explode in flight, killing seven astronauts.

In 1989, U.S. President George H. W. Bush declared the War on Drugs which is still being conducted today.
8. Non-battlefield struggle between years 1946 and 1990. Two nations make the world tremble. "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" Who were the nations and what was this struggle called?

Answer: U.S.S.R. and U.S.A./The Cold War

This conflict affected the entire world, threatening nuclear winter if it ever became "hot".
9. Empress Matilda's compromise. Henry VIII's serial marriages. Queen Elizabeth the 1st's counselors' urging her to marry. What do all these things have in common?

Answer: Primogeniture male preference succession

While we have examples of English and Scottish queens ruling on their own, the way primogeniture worked in England until recently was that the successor to the throne was the oldest legitimate son, the next oldest son, etc. Daughters were not heirs to the throne unless no legitimate males existed. Female rulers were regarded with suspicion due to their "frail nature." Elizabeth I never married and thus avoided the mistakes that Mary I and Mary Queen of Scots made which cost them so much. The Empress Matilda never sat on her throne and made war against the usurper Stephen of Blois until she ran out of allies. She compromised with Stephan by resigning herself to his reign so long as her son Henry was his heir.

Henry VIII married six times in hopes of a living son. He got the feeble Edward VI. He little realized that he had already sired one of England's greatest rulers, Elizabeth I.
10. What year was the 900th of the second millennium? Be cautious in your answer!

Answer: 1900

There is some controversy about whether 1900 or 1901 is the beginning of the 20th century. The Gregorian calendar would indicate the usage of 1900. But many use the logic that there was no year zero at the advent of the Christian Era calendar. All calendars are human constructs to manage time, so take your pick!
