The reign of Heraclius, who ruled from 610 to 641, marked the beginning of the major Hellenization of the Eastern Roman Empire, starting from the official proclamation of 620 in which the official language was proclaimed Greek, instead of old Latin. (Obviously, Greek had been used for many purposes before this date).

The official name of the land was now Basileia ton Romaion (Kingdom of the Romans) and for most historians, it marked the beginning of the Byzantine Empire.
