Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "American Idiot" (the musical) was based on and featured songs from two of Green Day's albums that focused on life in a particular time period. When was the musical set?

Answer: Early 21st century

The characters in "American Idiot" lived in a post-9/11 world and faced 21st century problems. During the tenth anniversary tour, news clips and political speeches were shown on a loop before the show began. All of the clips were about the 9/11 terror attack in New York and the resulting war on terror.
2. Which song opened the show in a fury of angst and rebellion?

Answer: American Idiot

Many of the performances in the original run and in the tenth anniversary tour featured a live band on stage throughout the show. "American Idiot" set the energetic, face-paced tone for the rest of the musical. After the opening number, Johnny introduced himself and the other two main characters.
3. What did Johnny and his friends spend most of their time doing at the beginning of the musical?

Answer: Drinking alcohol and taking drugs

The characters in "American Idiot" were seen drinking alcohol and taking drugs throughout the show. Both Johnny and Will experienced the negative effects of drug abuse, however. The musical explored how drug abuse can affect relationships.
4. Johnny had bus tickets for himself and two friends to move to the city. Why did Will choose not to go in the end?

Answer: His girlfriend was pregnant.

Johnny and his friends were hoping for great things in the city. As Will was preparing to leave, however, he found out that his girlfriend, Heather, was pregnant. He decided to stay to be with her. Heather soon realised that Will wasn't going to be a responsible father and eventually left to raise the baby herself.
5. Which song did Johnny sing as he walked through the city alone and first saw the woman he called Whatsername?

Answer: Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Life in the city didn't live up to Johnny's expectations. He wandered through the city singing "Boulevard of Broken Dreams". While he was walking, he noticed a woman at a window, but didn't have the courage to talk to her at first.
6. Tunny enlisted in the army and was sent to a war zone. What happened to him there?

Answer: He was injured and his leg was amputated.

Tunny was treated for his physical injuries and his leg was amputated. He also returned from the war with mental scars and suffered from hallucinations. Tunny fell in love with one of the nurses who was attending to him. He called her the "Extraordinary Girl".
7. Which part of Johnny's life did St. Jimmy represent?

Answer: His drug addiction

St. Jimmy encouraged Johnny to take drugs. At first Jimmy gave Johnny the courage to speak to Whatsername and begin a relationship with her. His addiction, however, caused Johnny to choose drugs over his girlfriend. He threatened to hurt Whatsername and himself, resulting in Whatsername leaving for good. Johnny realised how destructive Jimmy was and 'killed' him by getting clean.
8. Johnny, Tunny, and Will were eventually reunited during which song?

Answer: Homecoming

Johnny got a desk job but found that it didn't suit him. He decided to sell his guitar to pay for a bus ticket home. Tunny returned from the war with the Extraordinary Girl and Will realised that he was missing out on time with his family. The three friends were reunited in their home town during the song "Homecoming".
9. Who played the role of St. Jimmy in some Broadway shows in 2010 and 2011?

Answer: Billie Joe Armstrong

Green Day's vocalist and guitarist, Bille Joe Armstrong, took over the role of St. Jimmy for some of the performances on Broadway in 2010 and 2011. His inclusion in the cast made ticket sales rocket upwards. Davey Havok, the lead singer of AFI, also played the role in a number of shows in 2011. Other local musicians took on the role during international tours.
10. Which song from Green Day's album "Nimrod" did the cast perform right at the end?

Answer: Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)

After the cast had taken their bows, they performed "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" with an accompanying acoustic guitar. This was the only song from "Nimrod" that was featured in the "American Idiot" musical. The other songs were taken from the original "American Idiot" album or "21st Century Breakdown", with one especially recorded for the stage production.
