Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you're "praying at the porcelain altar", "yodeling in the porcelain canyon", or "driving the porcelain bus", what are you actually doing and where are you?

Answer: Vomiting while holding the toilet bowl rim

The classic position has the sufferer on their knees, with head over the bowl, and hands on either side of the rim. This may look terribly amusing, but as we all know, it's not much fun for the one who is doing the praying/yodeling/driving.
2. All of the following expressions could be used as a euphemism for vomiting, but which one of them is in common use?

Answer: Having a technicolor yawn

This is the only expression that is in common use. The others were simply invented and then thrown up at you.
3. Only one of the following expressions has been frequently used to describe the act of throwing up your food. Which one is it?

Answer: Parking a tiger

One of the more unusual expressions. Tigers make a growling noise, are brightly coloured, and may lie waiting in ambush for the unwary - other than that I'm not sure what the relevance is. Perhaps it will remain one of life's mysteries, like why you find things in puke that you swear you hadn't eaten.
4. According to a common euphemism for being physically sick, who would you be talking to "on the big white phone"?

Answer: Ralph

The "big white phone" is the toilet bowl, and to "ralph", of course, is to be sick. However, while you might be "talking to Ralph on the big white phone", someone might form the opinion that you are conversing with God, since the name of the Almighty is commonly invoked on such occasions.
5. You're at a party and you've just eaten three cup cakes, two bowls of crisps, some fried chicken, pretzels, lasagna, and a Greek salad. Unfortunately, you've also had seven beers, two red wines, and a pina colada, and you're about to conform to an old expression which says that you'll be "laughing" at what?

Answer: The lawn

Most of us have been "laughing at the lawn" at some point. Unfortunately, party hosts find nothing amusing about the situation the next day (and neither does the person who found the lawn so humorous).
6. Which of the following euphemisms for being physically ill is commonly used, and was not simply invented for this question?

Answer: Tossing your cookies

Veteran exponents of the "liquid laugh" will probably be quite familiar with this expression. Even if you haven't eaten any cookies, you can still "toss" them.
7. If you're feeling well enough, can you pick the established euphemism for vomiting from the ones I've simply made up?

Answer: Training to be a supermodel

Why are some supermodels so skinny? Hopefully it's not because they indulge in a lot of "3-D belching". This less traditional euphemism wouldn't go down very well on the catwalk (although a model would, if they'd slipped in the stuff). Apologies to supermodels everywhere.
8. One of the following euphemisms for vomiting has been around for some time, but the others are my inventions and need to be purged. Which one would sound familiar to many people?

Answer: Delivering a pavement pizza

You might also be "making a pavement pizza", or something similar. When it comes to bad taste, this expression is supreme. Hold the anchovies, please.
9. All of these euphemisms for upchucking food might be appropriate, but which of them is an established one?

Answer: Gargling gravy

Those of you who regularly "blow chunks" would be aware that "gargling gravy" can be an apt description of the noise and feeling that is associated with the activity.
10. When someone is being physically ill, they are sometimes said to be suffering from what?

Answer: Oral diarrhoea

Quite disgusting, but perhaps an appropriate term. Mind you, one might well resemble Quasimodo when producing "oral diarrhoea".
