Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Don't come the raw prawn with me, mate!'. If an Aussie said this to you, what does he mean?

Answer: 'You can't fool me, pal!'

Also can be said 'Don't try to pull the wool over my eyes'. A prawn is a small saltwater crayfish, and is green when uncooked.
2. To get a hot tip, for example, to be told the winner of the next horse race, is to get the _____?

Answer: good oil

Also known as the 'drum'. eg, 'I'll give you the drum.' Origin unknown, but probably relating to World War 2 troops.
3. If I was to 'chuck a u-ey in my ute', what am I doing?

Answer: turning my car to head in the opposite direction

A 'U-ey' is a U-turn, and a 'ute' is a utility vehicle, similar to a pick-up truck.
4. Which of the following is NOT a meaning for the word 'blue'?

Answer: a river

To get involved in a blue is to get into a fistfight. The Aussie sense of the ridiculous is highlighted by calling a redheaded man 'Blue' or 'Bluey'. The same logic applies to calling a bald man 'Curly' or a short person 'Lofty'. To make a blue also means to make a mistake.
5. What are 'salties' and 'freshies'?

Answer: crocodiles

Strangely enough, salties live in salt water and freshies live in fresh.
6. What is the most popular sport held on Christmas Day down-under?

Answer: backyard cricket

December is summer here, and usually very hot. Everyone remembers the 100 runs they scored in Mum's backyard. Rules are very arbitrary, for example, if you hit the ball over the fence, you are 'out' AND you have to go and find the darn thing. High ratings are given for taking a fantastic catch without spilling your beer.
7. Bundy and Coke is an alcoholic drink that is quite popular in Australia, but what specific type of spirit is 'Bundy'?

Answer: Rum

Named after the town of Bundaberg in south east Queensland, and made from the local sugar-cane, Bundy is one of the top-selling brands of rum in Australia.
8. What are croweaters, sandgropers and banana benders?

Answer: nicknames for residents of various states

Interstate rivalry is fierce in Australia, especially on the sporting field. Very derisive names are inflicted on other states, however, we will band together as one if we feel threatened. A Croweater is a South Australian, named (allegedly) for the multitudes of the large black birds of the crow family, a sandgroper is from Western Australia which has the largest desert areas and a banana bender is from Queensland where the majority of our tropical fruits are grown.
9. What activity do these words all relate to? Pot, Handle, Schooner, Pony?

Answer: beer drinking

They are all beer glasses of varying size, depending on where you are. In my home town of Sydney a schooner holds 15 oz and a middy holds 10. A 'handle' is a beer mug with a handle and can be any size but usually holds about a pint of your favourite brew.
10. 'The relos have lobbed'. What has happened?

Answer: your family has just arrived

'Relo' is a lazy way of saying 'relative' or 'relation'. Lobbed means arrived. I hope they answer affirmatively to the question 'didjabringabeeralong?'.
