It's an "L" of a Quiz

My favorite game here at Fun Trivia is Word Wizard, so I have taken it upon my self to do a word definition quiz with a little humor added. Hopefully I have done so without offending anyone.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the meaning of the word "labile", which is used in chemistry as well as in the social sciences?

Answer: open to change

Labile is defined as open to change, temperamental, moody, or in chemistry as constantly changing. The word labile is used in chemistry as in "a labile compound". In Social Sciences it is more likely to describe an emotionally labile person.

Example of its use: Are most quiz authors labile when they read their editor's comments?
Or: Are most quiz editors labile when they edit quiz author's presentations?
Or: None of the above.
2. What is the meaning of the word "lapidate", which in its simple but horrific definition has been in the news during the past couple of years?

Answer: stone to death

Lapidate is the act of pelting with stones; a punishment inflicted by throwing stones at the victim. St. Stephen is most commonly known as the first Christian martyr. He was an early follower of Jesus and was stoned to death by a mob outside the city of Jerusalem shortly after Christ's crucifixion.

Example: Because of the seriousness of the word lapidate and the use of this punishment which has been ordered for a person(s) according to recent newspaper accounts, I will not try to give a humorous example of this word. However this is the only word to escape my punishment (?).
3. What is the meaning of the word "lesion", which is more commonly used in medical terminology?

Answer: a sore

A lesion can be defined as a sore, a scratch, a cut, a bruise, an abrasion, or pimple. We are most familiar with many of these, particularly in childhood.

Example: Mommy to toddler after he falls and cuts his knee: "Do you want Mommy to kiss your lesion and make it all better?"
Is the child crying harder now?
4. What is the meaning of the word "limaceous", which is like a garden pest?

Answer: slug-like

Limaceous means slug-like. Slugs are described in zoology as "a mollusc typically having a calcareous shell, muscular foot, head with mouth and sense organs, and a visceral mass containing most of the gut, the heart, gonads, and kidney".

Example: Mother to child who is dawdling over homework, "Do you want to be limaceous in all you do?"
Child: "Will I be rich if I am, Mom?"
5. What is the meaning of the word "lippitude", which is a kind way of describing how one might look after an all night drinking binge?

Answer: bleary-eyed

Lippitude is a bleary eyed condition or a soreness of the eyes as defined by the "The Collaborative International Dictionary of English" (Webster 1913).

Example: After researching this quiz, this author had such lippitude. Hmmmmmm, and the editor also?
6. What is the meaning of the word "lubricity", which seemed to be a negative trait of Elmer Gantry as he is portrayed in the movie of the same name?

Answer: oiliness

Lubricity is defined as oiliness, lewdness, or lasciviousness. In the movie the role of Elmer Gantry (Burt Lancaster) calls all of these adjectives to my mind. Playing the role of a Revivalist Minister (Elmer Gantry), Lancaster was excellent in personifying them.

Example: The gentlewoman to the snake-oil salesperson refusing to purchase his product: "Not today, sir, but I do admire your lubricity." The salesperson looks around for it.
7. What is the meaning of the word "luminary", a word that can be applied to a person or a thing?

Answer: a person of great intellectual stature

The meaning of the word "luminary" is a person of great intellectual or spiritual stature, or one who enlightens mankind. The other use of the word luminary occurs when we refer to heavenly bodies that give light such as the sun.

Example: Congratulations to all the luminaries of Fun Trivia who enlighten us daily and who challenge us to join them as the luminaries of quiz takers. And we thought we were just having fun!
8. What is the meaning of the word "lupine", which can have its use for a person or for a thing?

Answer: having the characteristics of a wolf

The word lupine is an adjective used to describe being wolflike or having the characteristics of a wolf. The wolf is seen in many cultures in either a positive or negative light. In fairy tales such as "The Three Little Pigs" the wolf is seen as conniving and threatening. Wolves in Chinese proverbs generally describe a person with hidden agendas. In the Wiccan religion the wolf is respected. Many European family crests display the wolf.

Lupine (sometimes spelled lupin) is also a perennial plant. It is a tall, bluish-purple flower which is a member of the pea family. It can be grown in the garden or can be seen on the roadside growing wild and sharing its beauty with us all.
9. What is the meaning of the word "lethonomia"?

Answer: the inability to recall the right name

Lethonomia is the inability to recall the right name, to fail to mention, or to treat with thoughtlessness, such as to forget one's family. It can be a memory problem or an intentional slur, such as "don't bother, forget it!"

Example: At a cocktail party, a person approaches you ready to shake your hand and greet you. You panic. You have met the person before and know the person's name. It is on the tip of your tongue, but you cannot for the life of you remember it, so you politely speak first and say as you extend your hand, "Oh pardon me, I have lethonomia" Surely the conversation will continue without having to use a name?

Another example: This author forgot to put more description in the question above as advised by the editors here at Fun Trivia.
10. What is the meaning of the word "lucubration" which this author has saved for the last question of this quiz?

Answer: a laborious intellectual effort

Lucubration is defined as a laborious intellectual effort of study or of pedantic or pretentious writing. It is also defined as the practice of reading, studying or writing at night under artificial light.

Example: Oh dear quiz takers you have guessed how this author will use the word lucubration in describing her quiz? Am I right? Is this a pedantic work?
Or, has this author under the glare of a candle, à la Abraham Lincoln, persevered through the night to produce this lucubration. This author awaits your assessment.
