Answer: Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny

In "All I Ask Of You" from "The Phantom Of The Opera".

Raoul is trying to comfort Christine after she talks of her fear of the Phantom and his power over her.

The song begins with his reassurance that he will guard and protect her, but then becomes a powerful love duet.

In "High Flying Adored" from "Evita".

Sang to Eva at Juan Perón's Inaugural Ball.

Ché questions Eva on the price of her fame and what she intends to do next.

Eva answers him in the final verse:

"My story's quite usual, local girl makes good, weds famous man
I was slap in the right place at the perfect time
Filled a gap--I was lucky
But one thing I'll say for me
No-one else can fill it like I can"

The disciples all fall asleep and Jesus has his moment of doubt and asks God why he must die.
4. Who professes his love with these lines? "I care more than I have ever cared. Yet I know that I am leaving. You'll be in my heart my whole life through. And all the love I have I leave with you."

Answer: John

In "All The Love I Have" from "The Beautiful Game".

Sung near the end of the musical.

John has been released from prison, killed Thomas and is escaping to England to join the IRA.

He is leaving his wife, Mary, and son, Sean, behind. Before he goes he gives Mary his old football and football shirt to give to Sean.

Mary pleads with him to stay but he is committed to the cause by this point.

The song is his final farewell.
5. Which character is responsible for these famous lines? "Let your mind start a journey Through a strange, new world! Leave all thoughts of the life you knew before! Let your soul take you where you long to be!"

Answer: The Phantom

In "Music Of The Night" from "The Phantom Of The Opera".

Sung in the first act where the Phantom is serenading Christine after luring her down into his lair.

It is one of the most famous songs in musical theatre selling millions of copies throughout the world.

Sarah Brightman has always maintained that ALW wrote this song for her, in a slightly different version, before 'Phantom' was even written.
6. Who sings these cynical lines? "Dreams are not enough to win a war Out here they're always keeping score Beneath the tan the battle rages Smile a rented smile, fill someone's glass Kiss someone's wife, kiss someone's ass We do whatever pays the wages"

Answer: Joe Gillis

In "Sunset Boulevard" from "Sunset Boulevard".

First song in Act Two.

Joe is justifying his decision to become Norma's 'kept man'.

He agrees that he has given up on his dreams and sold out for:

"Comfortable quarters,
Regular rations,
24 hour
Five-star room service."
7. Which character provides this rather colourful verse? "If my body really ruled me Then we both know all too well You'd end up with a lover Locked inside a prison cell"

Answer: Alex Dillingham

In "On The Terrace" from "Aspects Of Love".

Sang at the end of the musical where 34 year old Alex is trying to convince his cousin Jenny, who is only 14, that they must part.

Jenny is in love with Alex and Alex, although knowing it is not right, does return her feelings which is why he is leaving.

It's actually one of my favourite songs in the musical - with the harmony and the music slowly changing to the music from "Love Changes Everything" with Jenny's answer:

"No-one said that Romeo
Was a monster
Why are you
I'm as old as Juliet.
What -
What are you frightened off
When you know
You know you love me -
And love
Love changes everything
Turns the tide back
Breaks the rules"
8. Which leading man sings of his regret in these lines? "I have been spattered With innocent blood I should be dragged Through the slime and the mud"

Answer: Judas Iscariot

In "Judas' Death" from "Jesus Christ Superstar".

After he has betrayed Jesus, Judas has now seen him bloody and battered and goes back to the high priests racked with guilt over his part in it all.

He now fears that he is going to be blamed and remembered forever as a traitor, and feels betrayed by God for having chosen him to play this part.

After blaming God for murdering him, he hangs himself.
9. Which romantic hero is responsible for these lyrics? "I've re-lived every moment that I ever shared with you What fools we were to end a dream that looked like coming true Next time you fall in love it better be with me, the way it used to be"

Answer: Rusty

In "Next Time You Fall In Love" from "Starlight Express".

Sang after the final race, Rusty has found the 'Starlight Express' and won the race.

Pearl is alone in the freight yard. She has been very disillusioned by both of the 'glamour boys' of the race and finally realises that it's Rusty she's always loved.

In the original 1984 production this is where she sings "Only He" and then they both find each other and sing "Only You."

The later productions have replaced these with this song. The last line in the above stanza ends :

"Back then was when we touched the starlight".
10. This stanza is sung by which leading man? "Noble king, there is no doubt What your dreams are all about All these things you saw in your pyjamas Are a long-range forecast for your farmers"

In "Pharaoh's Dream Explained" from "Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat".

Set near the beginning of Act Two.

The Pharaoh has been plagued with dreams, his butler tells him about Joseph's ability to interpret them.

Pharaoh has Joseph bought to him and explains what he keeps seeing.

Joseph explains that the dream is signifying seven years of bountiful crops followed by seven years of famine.
