Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Max, Rolf, Elsa

Answer: The Sound of Music

Max Detweiler is a charming, urbane music producer. He is a good friend of Captain von Trapp and much loved by the children. He takes the course of least resistance in regard to the Nazi's Anschluss but in the end he helps the family to escape.

Elsa Schrader is a sophisticated wealthy baroness who becomes Captain von Trapp's fiancee and is responsible for Maria returning to the Abbey. She has no intention of remaining in Salzburg but intends to put the children into boarding school and live in Vienna.

Rolf Gruber is the 17 year old telegraph boy who is in love with 16 year old Liesl von Trapp. He is a sweet, carefree boy until he joins the Hitler Youth Movement and then has no time for her. In the movie he betrays the family to the Nazis as they are trying to escape but the stage show has him letting them go free.
2. Carlotta, Meg, Buquet

Answer: The Phantom of the Opera

Carlotta Giudicelli is the vain Italian prima donna of the Paris Opera House. She sees Christine as a major threat particularly after the Phantom sabotages her performance to help Christine gain prominence. She is also the lover of the leading man, Ubaldo Piangi.

Meg Giry is the daughter of Madame Giry who is the choreographer of the corps de ballet. Both Meg and Christine belong to the ballet and are friends. It is Meg who puts Christine's name forward to replace Carlotta at the beginning of the show. Christine also confides in her about the lessons she is receiving from a tutor she refers to as the 'Angel of Music'.

Joseph Buquet is the stage manager at the Opera House. During the song "Magical Lasso" he is showing off to the ballet girls and trying to scare them with stories of the Phantom whom he claims to have seen. The Punjab lasso that he refers to is the way in which the Phantom kills his victims so he is warning them all to 'keep your hand at the level of your eyes' so he can't get the noose around their neck. Ironically it is Buquet who is found hanging from the rafters during the performance of "Il Muto."
3. Kim, Ellen, Tam

Answer: Miss Saigon

Kim is the 17 year old Vietnamese orphan who is brought to the Engineer's nightclub and forced into prostitution during the Vietnam War. She is bought for an American soldier, Chris Scott, and falls in love with him. They become separated during the fall of Saigon and Kim is left behind and gives birth to their son, Tam. Kim's life is not easy as she lives a life of poverty and exploitation and she eventually kills herself.

Ellen is Chris' American wife whom he marries after the war. She knows Chris is haunted by someone but not who. They eventually learn of Tams existence and travel to see him but their plans to support him financially but in no other way lead to Kim's suicide to ensure that they will take Tam to America and give him a better life.

Tam is Chris and Kim's illegitimate son.
4. Maurice, Gaston, Chip

Answer: Beauty and the Beast

Maurice is Belle's rather eccentric father. He is the village inventor and is on his way to the Country Fair to show his latest idea when he gets lost in the woods. He ends up at the Beast's castle and gets imprisoned there. When Belle finds him she offers herself in his place and Maurice is allowed to leave.

Gaston is the vain, narcissistic hunter who is determined to marry Belle. He is portrayed as a muscle bound arrogant individual who the other village girls flutter around. His greatest flaw in the beginning of the show is this superficiality but jealousy over Belle's love for the Beast causes his change to the villain of the show. After trying and failing to get Maurice locked away in an insane asylum he rallies the villagers to storm the castle where he murders the Beast.

When the castle was enchanted and all the humans transformed into household objects, Mrs Potts, the head of the kitchen, is transformed into a teapot. Her son, Chip, becomes a cup.
5. Mary, Caiaphas, Peter

Answer: Jesus Christ Superstar

Mary Magdalene in biblical text was a Jewish woman who followed Jesus and his disciples. She is mentioned in all of the Gospels and was present at his crucifixion. She is also the first to see the resurrected Jesus. Western Christianity has long portrayed her as a prostitute although there is no written proof of this and it is now believed that she may have been confused with another Mary. It is known that she was a sinner and was saved by Jesus.
The musical tends to suggest of a history of promiscuity and plays on this to suggest a romantic form of love on her behalf.

Joseph Caiaphas was a High Priest in Jerusalem from 18 -36 AD. He is the son-in-law of Annas who preceded him from 6 - 15 AD and was still very influential. They are the antagonists of the show who set about trying to get rid of Jesus and eventually send him to Pontius Pilate for crucifixion.

The High Priests led a very comfortable life and were left alone to run their city so they become worried that if Jesus became much more influential that the Romans would come and destroy them and Jerusalem.

Peter was originally a fisherman but left to follow Jesus and became one of his twelve apostles. He played a large role in all of the Gospels. He was part of the inner circle and recognised Jesus as the Messiah. Famous for denying Jesus three times prior to his crucifixion he still went on to become the first Pope of the Church.
6. Fiyero, Nessarose, Boq

Answer: Wicked

Fiyero begins the show as a self-proclaimed shallow character who always takes the easier road as his opening song "Dancing Through Life" portrays. He is handsome, lovable and fun and seems the perfect match for Glinda but throughout the show his character develops into one with a social conscience and the courage to follow his convictions. He then declares his love for Elphaba instead. Fiyero becomes what will be 'The Scarecrow' in "The Wizard of Oz".

Nessarose is Elphaba's spoiled younger sister. She is beautiful but handicapped and spends most of the show in a wheelchair. She becomes the governor of Munchkinland after her father dies and uses her power to suppress her subjects in an effort to keep Boq by her side. Her unrequited love and jealousy leads her to become 'The Wicked Witch of the East' who is killed when Dorothy's house falls on her.

Boq is the Munchkin that Nessarose is in love with. He, however, is in love with Glinda and originally stays with Nessa out of pity but is then enslaved by her power. After Elphaba uses magic to enchant Nessa's shoes so that she can walk he attempts to leave her but she casts a spell that misfires and leaves him with hardly any heart left. Elphaba saves his life by turning him into the Tin Man but he believes Nessa when she tells him she did it on purpose. He is a lovable nerd before this point but becomes a crusader to help hunt Elphaba and kill her.
7. Marty, Kenickie, Patty

Answer: Grease

Martina Helena 'Marty' Maraschino is one of the Pink Ladies. Her main trait is her obsession with boys - particularly older ones. She has many pen pals in the military and spends the Rydell dance contest flirting with the judge, Vince Fontaine. Her character is not particularly developed beyond this although she appears nice, loves gossip and tries to put on a sophisticated front.

Kenickie Murdoch is a member of the T-Birds and Danny's best friend. He has spent the summer working to buy a car which is the subject of "Greased Lightning" which Danny ends up driving in the challenge at Thunder Road. He is the epitome of 1950's cool in both dress and manner although he does show a softer side when he finds out that Rizzo is pregnant and is obviously hurt when she says it's not his.

Patty Simcox is the quintessential popular girl which makes her the butt of jokes by the Pink ladies. She is a beautiful, bubbly cheerleader but is also intelligent and interested in student government. She is welcoming to Sandy and takes her under her wing.
8. Victoria, Bustopher, Gus

Answer: Cats

Victoria is one of the kittens and the only pure white cat in the show. She wears a pink collar with jewels. Although she does sing her role calls for extensive dancing skills which she uses in multiple numbers. She is a timid character but is rather bold in her affection for Rum Tum Tugger. Her naivety means she doesn't understand why Grizabella is shunned and so she is the first to reach out to try and help her.

Bustopher Jones is known as the 'St James Street Cat' because he visits all the gentleman's clubs there and eating all the rich food has made him rather fat. Like his upper-class neighbourhood he is a real gentleman and respected by the other cats. He is a fastidious black and white cat arranged to look like he's wearing a tuxedo and spats.

Gus, short for Augustus, is the theatre cat. He is a scruffy, thin tabby cat whose paws shake from old age but he is much respected by the younger generation. He loves to regale them with tales of the parts he used to play particularly the leading role in "Growltigers Last Stand" which he describes in detail.
9. Grantaire, Eponine, Gavroche

Answer: Les Misérables

Grantaire is one of the 'Friends of the ABC' and is portrayed as permanently drunk - he is usually seen carrying a bottle of wine with him. He doesn't have the same interest in the revolution as the others but is happy to join his friends, even when it is obvious they are going to be defeated - he does raise the question of whether they really think that their deaths will mean anything.

Eponine is the daughter of the Thenardiers. She is originally seen as a spoilt young girl growing up besides the poor Cosette. In Act Two their fortunes have been reversed, The Thenardiers have become members of a criminal street gang and she appears as a poor waif. Her entire part revolves around her unrequited love for Marius who has fallen for the young lady that Cosette has become. Eponine dies at the barricade after delivering a message for Marius.

Gavroche is a much younger street urchin living in the Parisian slums. He keeps his ear to the ground and passes along a lot of information to the ABC friends of whom he is always around. When the revolutionaries have run out of ammunition he climbs over the barricade to retrieve some from fallen soldiers and is killed.
10. Columbia, Everett, Eddie

Answer: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Columbia is a Frank 'N' Furter groupie and is often seen with Magenta watching the events of the castle on a television. She has been with both Frank and Eddie in the past (who have also been together) and is extremely upset when Frank kills Eddie. She is killed by Riff Raff and Magenta in the end when they stage a coup.

Dr Everett V. Scott is a former teacher and a friend of Brad and Janet. He is also Eddie's uncle and turns up at the castle looking for his nephew. Frank thinks he is working for the government in their UFO department and that Brad and Janet are spies. He transforms them all into nude statues but they are saved during the coup and left behind when the castle returns to its home planet.

Eddie is an ex-delivery boy, lover to both Frank and Columbia and nephew of Dr Scott. Part of his brain was used to create Rocky. When the guests are in the laboratory to see Rocky come to life he rides out of the freezer on a motorcycle. During the next song he seduces Columbia and gets everyone celebrating but is killed by Frank when Rocky starts joining in. He makes an 'appearance' in Act Two as the dinner that they are all sharing.
