Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Kuth hialbi salu ans"

Answer: God help his soul.

"God help his soul" was a Christian prayer, often used as the last sentence on the stone.
2. "Ulfr lit reisa stin thinsa"

Answer: Ulf had this stone raised.

It was very important to tell the world who did what when it was time to raise a stone.
3. "Anutar hik runar"

Answer: Anund cut the runes.

If you wanted to have a beautiful stone raised in memory of loved ones, you could always buy that service from an expert.
4. "Hulmkir kiarthi bur thosi"

Answer: Holmger made this bridge.

Holmger made a bridge in the name of Christ. It was a way to show your new belief in a changing world. A bridge in this case was a very easily constructed contraption across a small stream, using earth, wood, stones and so on.
5. "Trik harda kuthan"

Answer: A very good young man.

This formulaic phrase is often used to commemorate those who died young.
6. "Uftir asur buta sin"

Answer: After Assur her husband.

A lot of the clients who approached a rune-carver where women, wanting to raise a stone in rememberance of their men. I have heard of only one woman who actually cut her own inscription.
7. "At sik kuikuan"

Answer: To himself, while still living

This is an inscription on the famous Jarlabanke-stones. Yes, sometimes they themselves made sure that we would know who they were.
8. "Han ati ain tabu"

Answer: He alone owned Taby.

Yep, Jarlabanke again ! He was a true braggart, brazen enough to be part of this quiz twice.
9. "Sar flo aegi at upsalum"

Answer: He did not flee at Uppsala.

He was obviously a man and not a chicken, Asbjorn. The sentence ends with "But fought as long as he had weapons."
10. "Thur uiki"

Answer: Thor consecrates.

A sentence found on some stones. It could be unhealthy to cling to the old beliefs when Christianity swept across Scandinavia. Thor was a god for the little man, and Odin had his place among the ruling classes. All that changed of course when Christianity seemed like the correct way to go, a notion based more on politics than on belief.
