Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Henry T Ford has hidden his mode of transport in which of these Italian cheeses?

Answer: Mascarpone

The word "car" is hidden in the word mascarpone.

Henry T Ford was as an American industrialist and famous for owning Ford Motor Company, the forerunner for mass assembly production of vehicles in the early 20th century.

Mascarpone is a soft Italian creamy cheese, normally used in puddings and desserts. It is one of the key ingredients in the world renowned tiramisu, along with cream and ladyfinger sponges soaked in strong espresso coffee.
2. People who eat which French cheese sound as if they may also have a disorder that may be caused by alcoholism?

Answer: Livarot

The word livarot sounds a lot like liver rot.

People who drink too much alcohol get liver rot. One outcome is a medical condition called cirrhosis where cells of the liver become damaged and replaced by scar tissue. This can lead to irreversible damage and failure of the liver to function properly, sometimes leading to death.

Livarot is a pungent cheese from the Normandy region of France, known locally as 'le colonel'. During the making of this cheese, five bands of rush leaves are circled around the cheese to stop it from collapsing. The five rings are said to resemble the five stripes worn on a colonel's uniform.
3. What do you get when you cross a Smurf and a cow?

Answer: Blue cheese

Crossing a Smurf and a cow would give you blue cheese.

Smurfs are cute little blue creatures which featured in a Belgian cartoon, originally brought to us in 1958, but later spawning a feature film in 2011. Characters who live in the Smurf village include Papa Smurf and Smurfette who are often on tenterhooks because of the evil wizard, Gargamel.

There are several types of blue cheese worldwide including Stilton, Roquefort, Gorgonzola and Dolcelatte.
4. What type of cheese is made backwards?

Answer: Edam

The word Edam is the word "made" backward.

Edam is a Dutch hard cheese, normally with a red or yellow waxy rind. Back in the 12th century, a small community was formed outside Amsterdam along the River Ye. It was formally a waterway connecting the North Sea with the city, but is now known as the IJ, an inland waterfront which became land-locked over time. From there the community became known as Yedam, home of the cheese Edam as we know it today.
5. A cannibal could be said to prefer which smelly Dutch cheese in a bun with fries?

Answer: Limburger

Cannibals eat human flesh, but I am not sure whether they would eat limbs in a burger as implied by the question and answer.

Limburger is a cheese from the former Duchy of Limburg, the region now part of Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. The flavour is an acquired taste as the smell resembles stinky feet. Perhaps it is more palatable after a glass or ten of wine to null the senses!
6. Which type of cheese did the Beach Boys sing about?

Answer: Gouda Vibrations

Most people have gouda vibrations when they sing and dance along to the Beach Boys.

"Good Vibrations" was a popular song of theirs which was first released in 1966. It featured the lyrics, "I'm pickin' up good vibrations, she's giving me excitations".

The Dutch cheese Gouda is actually pronounced "how-dah" by the locals , and not the anglicised "goo-dah" as familiar to most people. It is believed to be one of the oldest cheeses in the world. The cheese has traditionally made from pasteurised cow's milk since the 12th century, soaked in brine to give it a nutty flavour then coated with a thin layer of golden rind.
7. What did the Cypriot cheese say when it saw itself in the mirror?

Answer: Halloumi

The cheese said "hello me" or "halloumi" when it saw itself in the mirror. Quite a cheesy pun, eh?

Halloumi is popular in parts of Europe and the Middle East, none more so that its country of origin, Cyprus. It is a mild white cheese made from goat's or sheep's milk, with a similar texture to mozzarella. It has a higher than average melting point which makes it ideal for frying or grilling, usually in slices, and then served with a crunchy Mediterranean salad and olives.
8. Which Welsh cheese should you treat with extreme caution?

Answer: Caerphilly

The Welsh town of Caerphilly is pronounced as "care-filly", or as the pun suggests, "carefully". Some cheeses need to be handled carefully with caution as they tend to be crumbly and fall apart.

Caerphilly is a crumbly white cheese, originally made in England and then sold across the border into the south of Wales from the town with the same name. It is believed to have been popular with coal miners who wished to replenish their salt intake after working below ground for long shifts. Serve a wedge of this cheese with sliced pear, walnuts and crunchy bread for a light lunch, or with a full bodied wine after dinner.
9. Which of these cheesy quotes would have been appreciated by William Shakespeare?

Answer: To brie, or not to brie

To brie, or not to brie? I am sure William Shakespeare would have appreciate this cheesy pun as some of his plays were comedies. However, the quote "To be, or not to be" was the first line of a famous soliloquy from his early 17th century tragedy "Hamlet", a deep tale of death, murder and poisonings within the royal kingdom of Denmark.

Brie is a soft French cheese with a white edible rind. The subtle flavour can sometimes be lost during cooking, so the best way to eat it is fresh. There is nothing quite like brie warmed up to room temperature, spread over a crunchy baguette and covered with a sprinkling of sliced grapes.
10. I know this quiz is cheesy, but it brought a smile to my face when I created it and made me feel ______. What is the missing word?

Answer: Grate

Grate is a homophone for the word "great", both words sounding identical but spelt differently. Punny puns always make me feel great and I hope this has been reflected throughout this cheesy quiz.

Cheese graters are also great! Use them to manually (or electronically) grate cheese into fine pieces to add to sauces or in sandwiches. If you are anything like me, you will look over your shoulder to check nobody is looking before sneaking a small handful of grated cheese in your mouth. And frankly my dear, I don't give Edam!
