Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While 'tipping the scales' can mean to tilt the balance in favour of one party, what is an alternate meaning of this idiom?

Answer: The weight of something or someone

Usually used with 'at', to tip the scales is also used to express the weight of a specific amount.
2. What geological feature is used in conjunction with 'tip' to denote a small part of something much larger?

Answer: Iceberg

The use of the idiom 'tip of the iceberg' to mean a small part of a larger event or thing is based on the fact that a much larger proportion of the iceberg is present underwater than that which is visible on the surface of the water. Given the difference between the density of pure ice and sea water, usually only 1/8th or 1/9th of the iceberg is visible above water.
3. What item of clothing would one tip to express respect or just as a simple greeting?

Answer: Hat

In earlier days, men used to raise their hats as a form of greeting. Tipping of the hat as a mark of admiration or respect also made its way into language use. On the internet, a hat tip, sometimes abbreviated as ht, is used as a form of acknowledgement.
4. When you are unable to recall something familiar or well known, which part of the body is it said to be on the tip of?

Answer: Tongue

This phenomenon has been studied by psychologists and is commonly referred to as TOT. It has been found to increase with age, and studies have also been undertaken to observe neural responses during such occurrences.
5. In contrast, when information is readily available it is said to be at the tip of which body part?

Answer: Finger

At one's fingertips means to have information easily available. This idiom was used effectively by the Yellow Pages in an advertising campaign with the slogan "Let your fingers do the walking".
6. Continuing with the anatomy theme, which part of the body do you tip when you reveal your secrets?

Answer: Hand

To tip one's hand means to show hidden information and was originally used to indicate showing the cards held by a player during card games.
7. To tiptoe means to walk quietly on one's toes. Which of the following dance forms is performed mainly on tiptoes?

Answer: Ballet

Walking on tiptoe doesn't literally mean walking on the tips of one's toes. The weight of the body is generally placed on the balls of the foot. However, the ballet technique of 'en pointe' does involve movements done on the tip of the toes.
8. Which of the following tip-related idioms is used to indicate the entire body?

Answer: Tip to toe

Alternate forms of this expression are 'head to heels' and 'top to toe'. 'Top to toe' is found in Shakespeare's play "Hamlet".
9. Which of the following tip words is used to indicate something in good condition?

Answer: Tip-top

The origin of the word can be traced to the 18th century and means something of the highest quality.
10. To tip someone means to give additional money in acknowledgement of the service provided. Which of these professionals are you least likely to tip?

Answer: Accountant

According to a popular myth, pubs in the past had boxes labeled TIPS for patrons to put additional money as a kind of service charge with TIPS an acronym for 'To Insure Prompt Service'.
