Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main characters of the novel are George Edalji, a half-Indian solicitor and who else?

Answer: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

That was a given, I hope. The book portrays the lives of both Conan Doyle and Edalji, starting in early childhood and continuing on to after Sir Arthur's death.
2. George lives in the Midlands with his English mother, younger brother and sister, and his father, who is a ______ ?

Answer: vicar

George is very close to his family, even sharing a room with his father for most of his life. He frequently struggles with his religious beliefs.
3. In young Artur's life, this character is the most central figure and influence on him. Who is it?

Answer: His mother, Mary

Mary Conan Doyle was a huge part of her son's life, and was affectionately known to him as "The Mam." Arthur always asked his mother's opinions of everything he did, and truly valued her opinion.
4. The biggest obstacle in George's life occurs when he becomes the main suspect in a series of what crimes?

Answer: Animal Mutilations

George is suspected of mutilating several horses of neighboring farms, and is eventually arrested for the crime, despite the circumstantial evidence.
5. Arthur's life takes a very different turn. He becomes a doctor and marries, fathering two children. What disease is his young wife soon afflicted with?

Answer: Tuberculosis

Louise is diagnosed with TB a few years into the marriage. Arthur is determined to fight for his wife's life, even after he meets and falls in love with Jean Leckie and her life means he cannot be with Jean.
6. George Edalji serves time in prison in the novel for a crime he did not admit.

Answer: True

George serves two years of his seven year sentence, only to be released early because of heavy campaigning by his father and others with power. The crime stays on George's record, however, meaning he cannot return to his job as a solicitor.
7. Meanwhile, Arthur is having troubles of his own. What is his major problem throughout the novel?

Answer: He falls in love with Jean Leckie, but cannot marry her

While the others all happen to Doyle, clearly his main conflict is the fact that he is in love with Jean, but cannot be with her until his wife dies. This causes great distress for him, as he loves his wife as well.
8. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and George Edalji never actually meet in the novel.

Answer: False

Edalji writes to Doyle, asking for help to get his job back. Arthur becomes obsessed, instead, with clearing George's name.
9. Arthur finds the true criminal responsible for the crimes Edalji was tried for.

Answer: False

Although he does get him reinstated to the bar, the true criminal remains a mystery to this day.
10. The end of the novel finds George alone at a _____ ?

Answer: seance

After attending Arthur's funeral, George goes to a seance and ponders his eventual death. He wonders where Arthur has gone, and where he himself will go.
