What Do You Know About "The Child Thief"? Quiz

This is my first quiz on Brom's "The Child Thief", which is all about the "darker side" of Peter Pan. J.M. Barrie wrote Peter Pan to be a pirate-fighting, "magical" child. But does anyone stop to ask how a kid could be so heartless? Brom did.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the "child thief?"

Answer: Peter

Peter is known world-wide for leading children to his home, in Nevernever Land. However, in "The Child Thief", his home is a gargantuan tree that he calls 'Deviltree.' This is where the children Peter "steals" are tested for eligibility.
2. What is the name of the land where the Devils live?

Answer: Avalon

The name of this place and that of the original Peter Pan story are not the same. In Barrie's story, Peter leads the Darling children to Nevernever Land. However, Brom refers to this place as Avalon.
3. What color are the Devils' eyes?

Answer: Gold

Peter's eyes are described as "gold, like a lynx." ("The Child Thief" prologue {end of paragraph 12} by Brom.) Several times, the main character, Nick, notices that even his eyes are slowly turning gold.
4. Who are the "evil" enemies of the Devils?

Answer: The Flesh-Eaters

They are called this because the Devils believe that they eat flesh (the bodies of their captured children) to sustain themselves. They are actually humans who become twisted and contorted into scaly, rough, brutish creatures -- losing all sense of gentleness, and compassion, save for one man ... The Captain.
5. Who does Peter really fight for?

Answer: The Lady

Peter falls under her spell when she saves him from the Witch in the swamp. Peter is known for causing trouble, no matter what version you read. In this case, Peter angers the Witch of the Swamp, and he almost gets eaten. But the Lady protects him when he flees, thus sealing his soul into her service.
6. Which elf swears to kill Peter?

Answer: Ulfger

Peter eventually bites Ulfger's ear off when he gets annoyed with the conflict. Ulfger becomes a sworn blood-enemy of Peter. It is theorized that he was jealous of all of the attention received by Peter.
7. Who is the main character of this story?

Answer: Nick

Nick ran away from drug dealers, and later realized that he had abandoned his mother and grandmother. He had Peter swear to return and kill Marko, the drug dealer, and all of "his boys".
8. Who torments Nick when he gets to Deviltree?

Answer: Leroy

Leroy is a bully, known for being hateful, simply because he hadn't become a Devil. As it turns out, he made himself rotten and, unlike all of the other Devils, he never had a rough and traumatic background.
9. Which Devil was missing his left hand?

Answer: Abraham

Abraham was an escaped slave who lost his hand while he fled. His accent suggests he was from the Deep South. He offers Nick the most man-to-man help. He also helps Sekeu train all the Newbloods, or Devils-in-Training.
10. Which Flesh-eater turns out to be a good man at the end of the book?

Answer: The Captain

At the end, hoping to save one of the Devils -- Danny, the Captain turns on the Reverend. The Reverend is the proclaimed leader of these "Christian" Flesh-eaters. The Captain finally decided he had had enough of the sadistic and often Satanic practices of these "Christians."
