In previous books Doug, Todd, and Rick attended San Diego State University together for a little while. Katie met Matt after a game towards the end of the last semester before summer. She didn't know his last name so when the fall semester started she hoped to meet 'Matt Number 14' again so they could talk more. As it turns out 'Matt Number 14' is Christy's childhood friend from Wisconsin but Christy knows him as Matthew Kingsley.
