1. In Lewis Carroll's 1871 novel "Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There", Alice reads a poem about a creature whose appearance in the original illustrations distinctly resembled a dragon. What was the name of the creature?

Answer: the Jabberwock

At first Alice doesn't understand how to read the poem but then realizes she must hold it in front of a mirror because it's a mirror-image. Carroll created a number of words for the poem including some that have persisted in the English language, such as chortle and galumphing.
