Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote Catch-22?

Answer: Joseph Heller

Alex Haley wrote 'Roots', Arthur Hailey wrote 'Airport', 'Hotel' and 'Wheels', among others. Edmund Halley was associated with a comet.
2. Catch-22 had a different working title that had to be changed because of another book that was published shortly beforehand. What was the book?

Answer: Mila 18

Leon Uris released 'Mila 18', a story of the Holocaust, some months before 'Catch 18'. The number was changed to avoid confusion.
3. What island was the squadron based on?

Answer: Pianosa

At an unspecified location, somewhere near Italy. Pianosa is an actual Italian island, but the Heller version of the island is much larger than the real one.
4. Who did Yossarian (the 'hero' of the book) fall in love with in the first two sentences of the book?

Answer: The Chaplain

The first lines read.. 'It was love at first sight. The first time Yossarian saw the chaplain he fell madly in love with him.'
5. What 'suspicious' religion was the Chaplain?

Answer: Anabaptist

It was suspicious because Captain Black, who torments the good padre mercilessly, had never heard of Anabaptists.
6. What was the name of the dead man in Yossarians tent?

Answer: Mudd

Poor Mudd. He had only just arrived at the base and after dumping his luggage, was sent directly to the airfield, and not the Administration area. He was killed on his very first flight. The paperwork involved in his 'non-existence' is one of the several recurring sagas in the book.
7. When Yossarian was due to be presented with his medal, why was he different from the other recipients?

Answer: He was naked.

Yossarian refused to wear a uniform, because he had pieces of Snowden's blood and guts all over him.
8. What was Lieutenant Scheisskopf's sole passion and area of expertise?

Answer: Parades

He was later given permission to cancel parades that had not even been arranged. Another recurring theme throughout the book.
9. When did Hungry Joe have screaming nightmares, and fist fights with Huple's cat?

Answer: When he had finished all his missions and was waiting for the orders to send him home.

The other pilots used Hungry Joe as an indication of whether Colonel Cathcart had raised the number of required missions again. If Hungry Joe slept peacefully, he had not yet reached his mission target.
10. Strangely enough, Yossarian's first name is only mentioned twice, both near the end of the book. What is his name?

Answer: John

The first time is after he makes his 'odious' deal with Colonels Korn and Cathcart, they become all 'best friends'. The second time is where he gets stabbed.

I hope you enjoyed my little quiz. Even though this book is over 40 years old, it is still very relevant to today's world. If you have not read 'Catch 22', I would strongly recommend that you do.
