Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "'I guess it's over,' Veronica said. 'Bristol? asked Sarah. 'Everything,' Veronica replied." What are Veronica and Sarah discussing?

Answer: Nuclear bombs

In England a radio announcement reports nuclear bombs about to hit Bristol.

'Children of the Dust' is a science fiction novel which presents the idea of humanity living in harsh conditions before, during and after a nuclear holocaust.

It paints a clear picture of human struggle during a global crisis.
The ones that survived produce mutated offspring.

Veronica, a minor character, is introduced near the beginning of 'Children of the Dust'. Louise Lawrence describes how Veronica is exhausted but relieved after the nuclear bombs have stopped. Her step-daughter begins to understand life on earth will never be the same.
2. "'We don't even like each other very much,' Sarah mourned. 'Then I suggest we start,' Veronica said crisply. 'Because all we have is each other.'" What is the relationship between Sarah and Veronica?

Answer: Step-mother and step-daughter

Sarah, a 15-year-old adolescent. She had always been certain that her home in Bristol would keep her safe.
Now it seems a life time ago that the radio had warned of the beginning to a nuclear war.

It doesn't help that Sarah and her step-mum never got along. However, now living in one room in their cottage, getting along is the ONLY option.

This quote demonstrates the positive differences war can make. One example is bringing people together.
3. Dwight, Ophelia and Simon all quote this sentence. Fill in the blank. "'We're ________ in a bunker.'"

Answer: dinosaurs

This quote is a harsh reminder that time and time again humanity unsuccessfully adapts to change.

One main character that is an example is Ophelia. Her character sees the outside world after living in an underground bunker for the first time and shies away from it. One week out of her reassuring bunker world she meets mutants, views death and dramatic land change completely different from what her father re-accounts to her.

Simon in particular is the only main character that does move towards the future and not live in the past. He in fact chooses to live with the mutants.
4. Simon is related to the mutants.

Answer: True

Ophelia, Simon's mother, travels with her father, Bill Harnden, to warn the mutants of the general in the bunker planning to "borrow" (take) their cattle. The general decided to take the mutants' cattle for the bunker people's nutritional needs.

In all actual fact the bunker was running out of food. However they were also running out of most resources like clothing, fuel, and shelter supplies.

Simon's mother found that one of the survivors living amongst the outsiders was in fact her half sister.

Her sister was the first generation that began to give birth to mutants.
5. "From a busy, bossy, organizing little girl, ______ had changed into a child who was remote and self-sufficient, not questioning what anyone did unless it directly concerned her." Fill in the blank.

Answer: Catherine

Catherine is known by three names.
Catherine, Kate then Old Kate.

Catherine was her first name. She was eight as she lived under the table in the living room while there was the fall of nuclear dust.

Her name became Kate when she went to live with Johnson.

Her last name was Old Kate while she lived with the mutants, old and blind.
6. "'__________ got no right!' Dwight said bitterly. 'You mean we've got no rights,' said Bernard Sowerby. 'Nobody has,' said his sister. 'Nobody has any real rights to how this bunker is run.'" Fill in the blank.

Answer: MacAllister's

MacAllister is the much-hated General of the underground bunker.
He leads the bunker people but is famous for making the wrong decisions.
Nearly everyone in the bunker, including the children, greatly dislike him.

MacAllison is also the other real character. He is Dwight's father and comes to collect the cattle his son is trying to protect for the mutants. Son is against Father in this novel, which brings us to the true happenings in war.
7. This quote is not in "Children of the Dust". "'Lilith's a mutant,' she said. 'That's evolution for you,' said Dwight. 'You don't understand! The mutant gene is a dominant gene! Think what it means!'"

Answer: False

After the nuclear war the children born showed extreme signs of mutation.
It scares Ophelia as she begins to wonder if the mutation gene is dominant.
However Dwight isn't worried; to him evolution is running its course.
8. Name the correct minor characters living in the period that Simon is alive.

Answer: Laura, Lilith and Old Kate

Sarah: Is the the first major character found in the beginning of 'Children of the Dust'. She lives alongside Veronica and Catherine. Catherine was an eight-year-old girl at the time.

Allison: Is Lilith's sister, a character we are given little information about. This mutant woman is also Laura's mother. Her name came from MacAllister (Dwight's father).
9. What is the scientific name Louise Lawrence creates for the mutants?

Answer: Homo superior

'Homo sapiens' is the correct scientific name given to humans.

As the Homo superiors were made the dominant species, it is a well-thought-of logical choice for such a powerful group.
10. "It no longer mattered what she was, or how ___________. In the past the inability of people to reconcile themselves to each other's differences had led to tyranny, confrontation, war and subjugation." Fill in the blank.

Answer: different

After you finish my quiz think about the beautiful world we have. This novel is crafted in stealthy fashion. Be sure to read it!
