Dean Koontz, "The Face of Fear" Quiz

This quiz is about one of my favorite books, "The Face of Fear". Even though the story was interesting, I was hoping for an alternate ending. This should be quite easy for those who read the book and have a good understanding of the book.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the occupation of Edna, the first mentioned victim in the book?

Answer: dancer

Edna Mowry worked as a stripper at the Rhinestone Palace.
2. What was the murderer's nickname, given to him by investigators?

Answer: The Butcher

Named The Butcher because some of the women had parts of their bodies removed and by the way they were murdered (or 'carved' as stated in the book).
3. What was the cause of Graham Harris's lame leg, that causes him a great fear of heights?

Answer: mountain climbing accident

His accident occurred while he attempted to scale Mt Everest. After the accident, he had trouble using his leg but had gained psychic visions that he'd use to help police. He hated the visions and wished they would go away.
4. What two poets did the murderer write lyrics from on the wall of the victim's home in blood?

Answer: Nietzsche and Blake

They were two poets who inspired the murderers in the story. Their poetry was similar because they believed in a new race of supermen, but were different in point of views of the roles of women.
5. Even though the pyschic Harris could not give facial features of the killer, what description did he give?

Answer: the murderer is not mentally ill

Harris said that The Butcher is not mentally insane and that he would pass any psychoanalysis with flying colors. The murderer does think he is superior to other humans and is part of a new race of supermen but the psychic (Harris) does not know this information.

The butcher (Dwight) does know the cops well and was a clue left behind by him. When he left the clue, he really did mean that the cops knew him well because he was a police officer himself! This was how he was getting in the homes of women and why he was hard to catch, because he knew how to get around the system.
6. What led one of the detectives to believe there were two killers acting as one?

Answer: all of these

Yes there were two Butchers, Frank Dwight Bollinger and Anthony Prine (the talk show host) A.K.A Billy. They met each other and found they had a lot in common, and after a night they spent together with a woman, they thought of each other as one or whole. Frank even let Billy call him Dwight, the name of Frank's maternal grandfather and the name only his grandmother called him.

The detective realized it was two Butchers when he saw that the first butcher would have a big appetite after the murder and the second butcher lost his and would fake a meal by throwing food down a garbage disposal.

The second Butcher wasn't as messy with the food, unlike the first one. The detective also knew that The Butchers weren't sexual predators because specific body parts of the females weren't mutilated as in sexual murders.

The mutilation was just thrown in for kicks because it would not be much more wrong than murder.
7. When the murderer found out about Harris's involvement in his case, he decided to kill him. The killer used his real name to set up an appointment at Harris's office at night when it would only be a few people working. The killer learned the number of people inside the building and where they were. He killed them one by one, but saved Harris and his fiance for last. How many people did the murderer kill?

Answer: 6

He killed three guards, one engineer, and two people working in their office who, when approached, lied and argued about who was who but it didn't matter, they both were killed. Bollinger shut down all the elevators except one, which was the one he used, and cut off the phone lines.
8. When Connie and Harris knew what the murderer was there for, they started playing cat-and-mouse games with the killer until they realized there was only one way for them to make out it alive. What was the way? (Hint, it is related to Harris's fear.)

Answer: go outside and climb down the building

Harris and Connie do try to climb down the building, but when Bollinger finds out what they were doing they had to keep changing locations from where they were climbing, and had to rappel down the building. This caused Harris to have flashbacks of his accident.
9. During the cat-and-mouse games at the Bowerton Building the killer began to reminisce about how and why he started this whole thing. What was the main motive for his actions?

Answer: He believed he belonged to a new race of supermen and that he would start an Armageddon to move humans out of the way to make room for supermen

One day, Billy told him about his plan to bring a race of new supermen. They would first kill 20 white women and to throw police off, kill men. Then kill according to race, religion, politics, way of living, occupation, and other distinctions that will turn everyone on everyone.

It would start in the area and spread over the U.S. and then all over the world. This would bring forth the race of new superhumans. He also did get an adrenaline rush when he thought he may get caught, and while doing the murders.
10. After the cat-and-mouse games were over Connie and Harris lived but the killer died during a freak accident. They were allowed to go home after being questioned by the police and escaping the media. When they arrived at their home, one of the detectives working on the case, Perduski, was hiding in their closet. Why was he there?

Answer: He suspected something suspicious was about to happen and wanted to prevent it

Just as a detective predicted, there were two Butchers and the other one (Billy) was waiting for Connie and Harris when they returned home. Luckily Preduski suspected it and was hiding in the closet and saved the day just as Billy was about to attack. I hated the part with Dwight's death even though he was a killer.
