Dusty Fog fought for the South in the Civil War. He was born in Rio Hondo, Texas, and joined Texas Light Cavalry at the age of 15/16. He became captain in Texas Light Cavalry, Troop C, during the last years of the war.

Dusty Fog meets Mark Counter in Mexico and Ysabel Kid just outside Browsville, Texas, when he is sent on a mission to bring back Bushrod Sheldon and his men, ex-confederate soldiers, soon after the war is over.
All told in the book "Ysabel Kid."

Answer: five feet six

When people hear about Dusty Fog they think he is over six feet tall, and looks like a Greek God, but that is the description of Mark Counter. They can't believe a man with Dusty's reputation is only five feet six, but when he is in command, or angry, he seems to be the tallest man there.

This has been useful in some of the books where Dusty goes on a secret mission and doesn't want to be recognized. One example of this is told in the book "Welcome to Hell."

After a dangerous trail drive to Tombstone, they reached it in time for the fair and the shooting contest. Ysabel Kid won the rifle shoot, and won a "one in a thousand" Winchester rifle. Mark Counter came second in the pistol shoot where Dusty won.
