1. What does Matt Scudder do at 8:30 PM most days?

Answer: Attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting

Matt Scudder starts this book at the beginning of a 90 (ninety) day program for alcoholics. The plan is to take one day at a time without a drink and attend an AA meeting each day for the full 90 days.
2. The title of the book was adapted from the end quote of a 1958 - 1963 television series, which is mentioned in the book. What title fills the blank? (It was also the title of a 1948 movie.) "There are eight million stories in the _____ _____. This has been one of them."

Answer: Naked City

The television series "Naked City" was set and filmed in New York. The book is about an ex-New York cop still living and doing his "favours" there. A serving policeman mentions the similarity.
3. Why does Matt Scudder end up in hospital?

Answer: A blackout caused by drinking

Scudder thinks that he can drink as long as he has no more than two drinks in a day. Then he reasons that if more than twelve hours have passed since his last drink, it no longer counts as it is more than a half day in the past. Sunday evening he lifts his third drink to his mouth and does not remember any more till he wakes up in hospital.
4. Who is Jim Faber?

Answer: A friend from the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting

When Scudder returns home after discharging himself from hospital, there is a message to say that Jim Faber called. It is not until they meet in the street the following day that he manages to put a face to the name.
5. Who is Anita?

Answer: Scudder's ex wife

Scudder returned a call from his ex wife on his discharge from hospital, only to discover that he had already done so the previous evening. He had also spoken to his sons. Anita had rung to discuss payment for orthodontic work needed by Mikey, one of his sons.
6. Who is Joe Durkin?

Answer: The detective in charge of the case that Scudder is looking into

Joe Durkin admits that he will not do much investigating before closing the file on the case. The work that he has already done was cursory. Scudder points out several facts from the photographs on file, including the missing set of hotel room towels.
7. Who is Kim Dakkinen?

Answer: A murder victim

Kim Dakkinen is the 23 year old who sets the story going. First she is a client of Scudder, and two days later she is found dead in a hotel room. She was a beautiful blonde with eyes a startling shade of blue.
8. Dr Casmir Levandowski gives Scudder the vital clue that leads to the murderer.

Answer: False

Dr Casmir Levandowski is just a name, dreamed up so that Chance can cover his tracks and retain his privacy. The owner on record of the converted fire station that Chance lives in is the doctor. Chance poses as his faithful black chauffeur.
9. Matt Scudder shoots the murderer.

Answer: True

Four bullets grouped in the chest. No ricochets so nobody but the murderer is harmed. Scudder reviews his feelings about it and decides that it was a job well done and something that he will be able to live with.
10. Right at the end of the book, why does Scudder cry?

Answer: He admits out loud that he is an alcoholic

Alongside Scudder's investigations is his fight to stay sober. He often manages a week at a time, but the urge to drink will not stay away. By standing up at the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and admitting that he is an alcoholic, Scudder has made the breakthrough.
