Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do the initials "H.P." stand for in "H.P. Lovecraft?"

Answer: Howard Phillips

Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born August 20th, 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island. He would die there in 1937... only 46 years old. In his short life, he wrote stories which would change science fiction and horror writing forever. Joyce Carol Oates and Stephen King both regarded Lovecraft as a powerful influence on their own writing.
2. The characters used by numerous other authors are often referred to as being in a "Mythos" named after one of Lovecraft's most famous characters. A dark god who sleeps beneath the sea in the dead city of R'lyeh, who is this character?

Answer: Cthulhu

"The Call of Cthulhu" is one of Lovecraft's best known works, and inspired a role-playing game, numerous short stories, video games, plush toys, a Presidential campaign, and even a movie or two. The Cthulhu Mythos generally refers to anything which references Lovecraft or the creatures he created.
3. Which Lovecraft character revives dead bodies, Doctor Frankenstein style, with an injection? In the Re-Animator movies, he is portrayed by Jeffrey Combs with a syringe of glowing green fluid.

Answer: Herbert West

The book was called "Herbert West: Reanimator", and doesn't closely resemble the movies. Herbert West is a great character, and has appeared in many other media forms: comic books, video games, musicals, and movies.
4. In the quaint little town of Innsmouth, the locals don't ever want to see you leave. They also love their visitors from the sea. Who are the visitors from the sea?

Answer: Deep Ones

In "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", we get a detailed look at the town of Innsmouth. The inhabitants cross breed over many generations with the fish/frog people from the sea, after old Obed Marsh struck a pact with them years ago. The movie "Dagon" is about the Spanish town of Imboca ("boca" being Spanish for "mouth") which has a similar populace.
5. Most of the creatures in Lovecraft's work are not described. In one story, however, the body of an Elder Thing is described by a character speaking over a radio. Which story was this?

Answer: At the Mountains of Madness

Professor Lake, in an arctic expedition, discovers the city of the Elder Things. He is never again seen alive. The remains of his expedition are discovered dead, killed in strange, inexplicable ways.
6. True or False: de la Poer is bothered by the sounds of rats in the walls.

Answer: True

If only that was all that bothered him...
In "The Rats in the Walls", Delapore (or de la Poer) awakens to the sounds of rats in the walls of his ancestral home. Once he is gone, the house is an excellent property to live in. Except for some sounds at night...
7. Charles Dexter Ward probably wished he'd never seen the portrait of which ancestor of his family?

Answer: Joseph Curwen

In "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward", young Charles discovers he has a strong resemblance to his ancestor Joseph Curwen. Researching his family history, Charles learns that Curwen had a dark, violent past full of witchcraft and murder. As it happens, his future holds those same elements.
8. The Town of Arkham has a prestigious university named after the river which runs through Arkham. What is its name?

Answer: Miskatonic

The Miskatonic University is a staple of Lovecraft's work, and appears in stories by several other authors. There are also a number of joke products available with the university name on them... even going so far as to come up with a name for the sports team. Go Fighting Cephalopods!

The Miskatonic is featured in the stories "Herbert West: Reanimator", "The Dunwich Horror", "The Thing on the Doorstep", "The Shadow out of Time", "The Whisperer in the Darkness", "The Dreams in the Witch-House", and in books and movies by several other authors.
9. True or False: Wilbur Whateley is a very handsome man.

Answer: False

The villain of "The Dunwich Horror", Wilbur Whateley has a goat-like face and wears baggy clothing to conceal the many lumps on his body. It isn't until after his death that people learn what those bumps were...
10. There is an evil book which is mentioned in many Lovecraft stories, reputed to have been written by Abdul Al-Hazred, the Mad Arab. What is this book?

Answer: The Necronomicon

The "Necronomicon" has appeared just about everywhere in popular culture. In Lovecraft's Mythos, one of the few English language copies of the book was translated by John Dee, the real-life spy, mathematician, and alchemist of 17th century England.

Lovecraft put the "Necronimicon" in "A History of the Necronomicon", "The Dunwich Horror", and several other stories. The rhyming couplet "That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die", which appears in "The Nameless City" and "The Call of Cthulhu", is quoted from the mythical book.
