Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What disease did Willow O'Keefe have?

Answer: osteogenesis imperfecta

Willow O'Keefe was the daughter of Charlotte and Sean O'Keefe. Throughout the course of the book, she turned six. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also known as brittle bone disease, caused her to have extremely weak bones that break easily. She had over fifty breaks in her life, one even caused by a sneeze.

The disease also caused her to be very small and short. People often thought she was two or three. Willow was also very intelligent, she read at a sixth grade level, and collected obscure facts.
2. At the beginning of the book, the O'Keefes left for a vacation. Where did they go?

Answer: Disney World

The entire family is excited about the trip. Amelia, Willow's twelve-year-old half-sister, said that is was their first vacation since Willow was born. However, the trip quickly turned disastrous. Almost as soon as they arrived at Disney World, Willow slipped and broke two bones.

At the hospital, the doctor suspected child abuse because of all the healing fractures. A social worker arrived and took Amelia to a foster home and her parents to the police station, where they spent the night. They were supposed to have a note from Willow's doctor with the information about her disease, that would have prevented this, but they forgot it at home.
3. Who did Charlotte end up suing?

Answer: Piper Reece

Piper Reece was Charlotte's OB/GYN during her pregnancy with Willow and, previous to the lawsuit, her best friend. The lawsuit was built on the premise that Piper should have told Charlotte earlier about Willow's disease so abortion could have been an option. Charlotte was just in it for the money. Sean refused to take part and eventually testified on the defense's side.
4. Throughout the novel, Marin Gates, the O'Keefes' lawyer, was on a personal mission. Who was she trying to find?

Answer: her biological mother

Marin Gates was adopted. Although she loved her adoptive parents and the life she led because of them, she felt the need to find her biological mother. The search involved a lot of phone calls and writing letters.
5. Which of these bad habits did Amelia do in the course of the book?

Answer: all of these

Amelia felt a lot of guilt, stress, and jealousy while dealing with Willow's disease and the lawsuit. She also dyed her hair blue. All of the habits stayed secret until some time during the trial. Piper found out about her throwing up and cutting herself from Emma, her daughter and Amelia's ex-best friend. Piper told Sean right away. Sean then searched Amelia's room and found food wrappers from when she would binge eat and Ziploc bags from when she would throw up in public.

He also found stolen clothes under her bed.

After the trial, Amelia was sent to an in-patient center.
6. Did Sean file for divorce?

Answer: Yes

Yes, after a lot of fighting and sleeping on the couch, Sean finally filled for divorce. This tore at the family even more. In the end, however, Sean and Charlotte made up and did not get divorced.
7. What about Charlotte's eighteen week sonogram should have told Piper that Willow had OI?

Answer: the brain looked extremely clear

The brain cavity looking extremely clear is a sign of OI. At the time of the ultrasound, Piper was only looking for signs of Down Syndrome. A lab tech mentioned the clear image, but Piper thought is was just due to their new machine. It was not until the twenty-seven week ultrasound, where many breaks could be seen, that Piper realized Charlotte's baby had OI.
8. In what coincidental way did Marin find her biological mother?

Answer: She was a juror.

After the first day of the trial, Marin and the opposing lawyer were called into chambers. The judge told them that one of the jurors, Juliet Cooper, had a conflict of interest. Marin and Juliet spoke for a short while. At the end of their conversation, Juliet told Marin not to contact her again and that some babies should not be born. Later, Marin drove to Juliet's house and asked her why she had put her up for adoption. Juliet then told her that when she was sixteen, she was raped, and Marin was the product of it.
9. How much money was awarded to Charlotte after winning the lawsuit?

Answer: eight million

After many days of trial, the jury found in favor of Charlotte, even though both Sean and Amelia testified for the defense. Amelia testified that she heard a conversation between Charlotte and Willow, where her mother told her sister she loves her and that she would not have gotten an abortion. The money could have paid for all of Willow's future medical expenses.
10. Which character shockingly died at the end?

Answer: Willow

The entire novel was written as if it was being told to Willow. The narrator's would refer to her as "you". Less than a year after the lawsuit ended, Willow went outside in the winter. She had always been fascinated with the iced over pond that Amelia would skate on.

She crawled out onto the ice, and it cracked under her. As she drowned she knew that this time, she wouldn't be the one to break. When they buried her, Charlotte placed the check for the eight million dollars in the casket with her.
