Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did the first attack on the telephone exchange take place at Sainte-Cecile fail?

Answer: The intelligence supplied by MI6 was incorrect.

MI6 was the British intelligence agency. They estimated the number of men guarding the exchange to be around twelve. Also they assumed that the Gestapo personnel employed at the exchange would be unarmed. However they were wrong on both accounts leading to the failure of the attack.
2. What was odd about Paul Chancellor's appearance?

Answer: His left ear had been wounded by a bullet and only the lobe remained.

Paul was an American who had been injured in a shootout with the Gestapo. His right kneecap had also been wounded and hence he was forced to retire from the army. He was in charge of the Jackdaws mission.
3. Who was the leader of the Jackdaws?

Answer: Flick Clairet

Major Flick Clairet was a senior agent in the Special Operations Executive (SOE) responsible for sabotage. She was the only one to survive undercover in France for more than two years. She would be an invaluable source of information to the Germans if captured alive, as she knew most of the Resistance circuits operating in France.
4. Why was Lady Denise Bower suspended from the mission?

Answer: She was untrustworthy and gave away secrets regarding the mission.

Denise was the sister of the Marquess of Inverlocky. She failed a test set by Paul and ended up telling a policeman at a bar all about their plans to blow up the railway tunnel at Marles. Simon Fortescue of the MI6 tried forcing Flick to take her with them to France but she was too much of a security risk to the rest of the team.
5. Who was the explosives expert among the Jackdaws?

Answer: Jelly

Jelly was a safebreaker and the oldest member of the Jackdaws.
6. What was found in Diana's pocket when she was searched just before the Jackdaws were to leave for France?

Answer: A half-completed crossword torn from the Daily Mirror.

Before boarding the plane to France, the Jackdaws were searched to see if they carried anything that would gave away the fact that they were Allied agents. The box of matches was found in Maude's suitcase while Jelly carried the playing cards.
7. How were the Allied agents supposed to identify Mademoiselle Lemas at the cathedral?

Answer: She wore odd shoes, brown and black.

She met the Allied agents at the crypt in the cathedral at three o'clock in the afternoon. The agent would approach her and say, "Pray for me" to which she would reply, "I pray for peace".
8. What was Michel's codename?

Answer: Monet

Bourgeoise was Mademoiselle Lemas' codename while Helicopter was the codename of Brian Standish, a radio operator. Dieter Franck gave his codename as Charenton when he was trying to convince Helicopter he was a member of the Resistance.
9. What was codenamed as Champ d'Or?

Answer: The potato field to the east of Laroque.

The field was located 5 kilometers from Laroque in the village of L'Epine. A plane was supposed to pick up the Jackdaws from there and take them back to England.
10. How many Jackdaws survived at the end of the mission and returned to England?

Answer: 2

Only Ruby and Flick returned to England with Paul. Diana and Maude were captured by the Gestapo and died at a camp in Ravensbrueck. Greta and Jelly lost their lives while trying to blowup the telephone exchange at Sainte-Cecile.
