Gandalf plays the most instrumental part in the entire War of the Ring. He is one of the Istari, a wizard sent to Middle-Earth to help contain and defeat Sauron. He was deeply involved in Bilbo finding the One Ring, Frodo heading to Mordor, and all the planning of just about everything that was done.

Aragorn was another large part of the puzzle in the War of the Ring, if only in the ending days of it. He united Gondor in their fight against evil, he commanded the dead to save the living Men at the Fields of Pellanor, he protected and guided the Fellowship of the Ring, and became the King of Gondor.

Saruman was one of the villains who betrayed Gandalf in his quest for power. He captured and held Gandalf for some time, was Sauron's main henchman, created hordes of Uruk-Hai, and told Sauron of the news of the War through his Palintir.

Obviously, the most instrumental "object" in the War of the Ring. It was made by Sauron, was taken from him by Isildur, then went to Gollum, Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Frodo, and again Gollum.

The Nine are servants of Sauron, who bend to his will becasue of their past desire for power. They are always drawn to the One Ring, and will do anything to retrieve it for Sauron. They have been a major thorn in the side of everyone they meet.

Sauron is the most important villain in the War of the Ring, and was actually consulted by the Elves on how to make the Rings of Power. When he made the One Ring, he ruled Middle-Earth for awhile, until the Ring was taken from him by Isildur. When Sauron re-surfaced, his desire for the Ring drove him to do everything (corrupt Saruman, send out Nazgul everywhere, invade every stronghold of Men) to retrieve it.

Galadriel is the Elven Queen of Lothlorien, and is thought to be the most beautiful and fair creatue in Middle-Earth. She aided the Fellowship by giving them hope, and objects to use through their quest while they visited Lorien.

Merry was the Hobbit who was with Frodo, Sam, and Pippin from the begining. He was a troublemaker, but matured, and eventually, along with Pippin, urged the Ents to cleanse Isengard. He also destroyed the Witchking along with Eowyn, and gave loyalty to Theoden, and the Fellowship while they were together.

Pippin was a mischiever who was best friends with Sam, Frodo, and Merry. He pledged his alliegance to the Fellowship and Denethor, helped distract Sauron's gaze from Frodo and Sam (though quite unintentionally), and killed a good number of orcs in the Mines of Moria.

Gollum was the bearer of the Ring for over 500 years after he killed his cousin Deagol for it. He was corrupted, and eventually had the ring "stolen" by Bilbo Baggins. He was captured by Sauron's forces and revealed the Ring's location, was helpful to Sam and Frodo in getting to Mordor, and eventually re-united with his Precious.
