quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the end of Book 1, Chapter 1, what is Frodo's and Bilbo Baggins' combined age?

Answer: 144

In fact, during the Party, 144 people were invited to a special family dinner in honor of the number, although many people were offended since they felt they were invited for no other reason than to fill the required number of seats. (For the interested, Bilbo was 111, Frodo, 33)
2. What son of Bard the Bowman ruled Esgaroth after his death?

Answer: Bain

Revealed by Gloin during the Council of Elrond, although at the time of the books, Brand, son of Bain, son of Bard, was the King.
3. When Frodo was leaving the Shire, how did he gain Meridoc and Peregrin as companions on the road?

Answer: Merry, Pippin, and others formed a conspiracy to help him on his journey

Merry, Pippin, Sam, and Fatty Bolger worked together when they became afraid that Frodo planned on secretly leaving the Shire. Merry, Pippin, and Sam would go with him and Fatty Bolger would stay behind to keep up the illusion that Frodo was still living in the Shire.

They revealed this plan on the first night in Frodo's new house in Crickhollow. In the 2001 movie, the four Hobbits met accidentally during the "Shortcut to Mushrooms" homage scene.
4. What was the name of the Orc who led the attack on Khazad-Dum, in Thror's time?

Answer: Azog

This was in one of the appendices. Azog slew Thror and planted his head on a pike outside the gates of Moria.
5. What was the name of Galadriel and Celeborn's daughter?

Answer: Celebrian

Celebrían was Elrond's wife and the mother of Arwen, one of the most loved/hated characters in the series... the hate aspect seems to be winning out recently due to her portrayal by Liv Tyler in the New Line movies by Peter Jackson.
6. Ohtar was the name of Isildur's servant who bore the shards of Narsil to Imladris.

Answer: True

Actually, there is some debate on this point, since the word "Ohtar" means "squire" and could therefore just be a description of the man's job. However, in the chapter "The Council of Elrond", it is stated to also be the name of the person responsible for bringing Valandil his inheritance; thus I will take it as canon.
7. On March 8th, Aragorn took to the Paths of the Dead. How many people (men, dwarves and elves) were in the company that braved that dreaded place? (Counting Aragorn)

Answer: 35

Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, being the only members of the original fellowship not sworn to other duties (Merry was esquire to Theoden and Pippin on his way to Minas Tirith with Gandalf), pressed on together, and with them the 30 Rangers (along with the two sons of Elrond) that met up with the King's company after the parley at Isengard.
8. What was the name of Éomer's sword?

Answer: Guthwine

During the siege of Helm's Deep, Aragorn and Éomer rally the troops to stop the rush of the battering ram. Aragorn cries "Anduril! Anduril for the Dúnedain" and Éomer "Gúthwinë! Gúthwinë for the Mark!" I believe this is the only time his sword is given its proper name in the main text of the novels.
9. According to Aragorn, what is the name of the forest in which Beren and Luthien met?

Answer: Neldoreth

Doriath was the name of Thingol and Melian's hidden kingdom, but when Aragorn is retelling the tale, he gives a different name for the actual woods (Book 1, Chapter 11, Page 218).
10. Where was Earendil (the Mariner) born?

Answer: Gondolin

Earendil was the father of Elrond Halfelven. In the chapter "The Council of Elrond" it is stated that he was born "in Gondolin before the Fall." He was the son of Tuor and Idril.
11. Which of the following famous Men is Aragorn not somehow related to?

Answer: Cirion

Cirion was the Steward of Gondor that "gave" the Mark to Eorl and his people. If you go back far enough, Aragorn is descended from Elros, Elrond's brother, and is thus descended from Barahir (Beren's father),who was Elros's great-great-grandfather. Earendil was Elros' father, thus Aragorn's ancestor, and he was the son of Tuor, who was a cousin to Turin.
12. Where was the Mathom-house where Bilbo's mithril coat was stored prior to his leaving the Party in Book 1?

Answer: Michel Delving

Michel Delving was later turned into a "lockhole" by the ruffians who over-ran the Shire.
13. Which of the following was the name chosen for the re-dug Bagshot Row after the Battle of Bywater?

Answer: New Row

Better Smials and Battle Garden were proposed, although in the end, good old-fashioned Hobbit-sense won out and it was simply called New Row. It became something of a Bywater joke to call it Sharkey's End.
14. In what year (of the Third Age) did wolves cross the frozen Brandywine River and cause havoc in the Shire?

Answer: 1311

And no living Hobbit, save Bilbo, was alive to remember it. In the reckoning of Men, the year was 2911, in Shire-reckoning, 1311
15. What three of the 12 Companions of Thorin Oakenshield are known to have set out to retake Moria?

Answer: Balin, Oin, and Ori

Of the Dwarves, Thorin, Filli, and Killi died in the Battle of Five Armies. Bifur, Bofur, Bombur (now so fat he needed to be lifted and carried everywhere by six strong young dwarves), Dori, Dwalin, and Gloin continued serving Dain II during his reign as King Under the Mountain. Balin led Oin, Ori, and others in the quest to retake Khazad-dum.

Although he was, for a short time, Lord of Moria, he and all his followers ultimately died before re-establishing the kingdom.
