Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After the War of Wrath, many of the Eldar wished to stay in Beleriand, though it had been laid waste. These came under the kingship of Gil-Galad. Where did they settle?

Answer: Lindon

Lindon (Harlond) was the country around the newly formed Gulf of Lhûn. This area came under the kingship of Gil-Galad, son of Fingon. Eregion, or Hollin, was founded on the western side of the Misty Mountains. Mithlond was the Grey Havens, ruled by Círdan. Himling was a mountain peak in Beleriand which became an island after the War of Wrath.
2. In the middle of the Second Age, the elves in Eregion befriended Sauron, despite Gil-Galad's warning. Sauron still appeared fair and took the name Annatar, meaning:

Answer: Lord of gifts

Sauron appealed to the Noldor's love for craft and beauty, and also to their unrest about lingering in Middle-earth. His name for himself was true, in a way: following his teaching, they achieved enough skill to make Rings of Power.
3. As soon as Sauron put on the One Ring, the elves were aware of his plans for dominion and fled with the Three: Vilya, Narya, and Nenya. What became of the other rings of power at that time?

Answer: Sauron gave them to others, in order to ensnare them.

It was then that Sauron distributed the other Rings of Power to dwarves and men. These rings, unlike the three elven rings, had been made with his help, and he had easier mastery over their wearers. The dwarves collected great wealth with their rings, while the men fell completely to Sauron's will, becoming the Ringwraiths.
4. After the fall of Númenor, Elendil founded the Northern Realm of Arnor. What was its chief city?

Answer: Annúminas

As they escaped the ruin of Númenor, Elendil and his sons arrived at Eriador in different locations. Elendil arrived at Lindon and traveled up the Lhûn, founding Arnor; Isildur and Anárion came up the Anduin to found Gondor. Osgiliath was the chief city in Gondor, the southern realm. Fornost was a Númenórean settlement on the North Downs, to the east. Aeglos was the spear of Gil-Galad.
5. As Sauron entered Dol Guldur, the Greenwood began to grow dark, eventually earning it the name Mirkwood. But around this same time, another significant event happened. What was it?

Answer: The wizards arrived.

The wizards arrived around the year 1050 T.A. According to the Eldar, they were sent by the Valar to contest Sauron. As far as we know, only Gandalf fulfilled that purpose. At the end of "Lord of the Rings", he mentions that his role was to be Sauron's enemy, and thus his work in Middle-earth was done.
Arwen was born in 241 T.A. Arnor was invaded by Angmar in 1409 and the kingdom ended in 1974 T.A.
6. What or who are the Úlairi?

Answer: Ringwraiths

The Ringswraiths were the men Sauron ensnared with Rings of Power, and eventually became invisible forever and Sauron's most deadly tools. The horns of Ulmo are the Ulumúri, the wizards are the Istari, and Urulóki is "dragon" in Quenya.
7. While the events of "The Hobbit" are taking place, the White Council decides to drive Sauron from Dol Guldur. Saruman, who previously opposed this action, now agrees. Why?

Answer: He believed Sauron's servants were close to finding the One Ring.

Saruman originally wanted to leave Sauron alone, hoping that the One Ring would reveal itself. But when the servants of Dol Guldur continued searching around the Gladden Fields, Saruman was afraid to continue his own search there, and feared Sauron would find it first. Ironically the ring had been removed from this location by Sméagol over 400 years before this.
8. Who forebode that the One Ring would be found, leading to war and the end of the Third Age?

Answer: Elrond

This was spoken to Gandalf at one of the earlier White Council gatherings. Saruman had been trying to assert that the One Ring had gone into the Sea and could not be found. Gandalf felt that it was actually best for the Ring to stay lost and eventually counseled that the Council could attack Dol Guldur regardless of the Ring's fate.
9. Even before the War of the Ring, Gandalf suspected that Bilbo's magic ring was the One Ring. Therefore he took action to keep the Shire safe. How did he do this?

Answer: With the help of the Dúnedain

Gandalf understood that the power of the One Ring was too great to be wielded by any of the Wise. Though he was not certain right away, he deeply suspected the ring's identity and felt it would be safest in the Shire, away from "wiser" eyes.
10. What treasure was found among the snows of Mindolluin?

Answer: A seedling of the White Tree

After being crowned, Aragorn was shown the seedling by Gandalf, and thus the line of Nimloth was continued in Gondor.
Narya, the ring of fire, was never lost but held in secret by Gandalf. The scepter of Annúminas was kept by Master Elrond until the heir of Elendil should arise. The crown of Eärnur, last king of Gondor, had to be retrieved from Eärnur's casket.
