Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Here's to Good Friends" by David Lubar, what is in the Coke bottle Brad keeps in his locker?

Answer: Vodka

Brad Ratner considers his life to be "balanced," never once thinking there might be something wrong in what he's doing. Then, one day, his friend Jordie and his brother give him a reality check.
2. In "Tic and Shout" by Gail Giles, what is the name of the student with Tourette's Syndrome?

Answer: Alex

Everyone in his school picks on Alex and calls him names, which makes his parents want him home schooled. With his sister Catherine's help and support, however, he convinces both his classmates and his parents that he can not only handle high school but also live a normal life. Of the other two answer choices, Lisa is probably the school secretary (or possibly an assistant or aide of some kind) and Doug is one of Catherine's classmates.
3. In "Triclops" by Julie Anne Peters, why does Amy miss out on school and other social activities?

Answer: Migraines

She wants to do well in her studies and attend parties, but that's hard to do when the sickness hits:
"Sick Amy has a name for the dark 'Roo.' She doesn't have a name for what happens in the dark. Roo holds her, shields her, Roo hides her in a blanket of black and deep and warm. Roo tries to make it better."
4. In "Under Control" by Chris Crutcher, where was Mr. Bartholomew working before he became janitor at the public library?

Answer: Eddie's school

He was the janitor, the same job he now performs for the library. "He came down on the side of intellectual freedom when the administration banned a book that a bunch of the "academically unfocused" kids, which included me, liked a lot."
5. "Way Too Cool" by Brenda Woods is about a young man suffering with asthma.

Answer: True

Aston is resentful that he has to carry an inhaler with him everywhere he goes. "He was thirteen with smooth chocolate-covered skin, taller than most men, and as he often told anyone who would listen, way too cool."
6. In "Good Hands" by Ron Koertge, why does Olivia break things off with Kent?

Answer: She doesn't

What she does do is push him away through her listlessness and "obsession" about her handicap. "No one wants a girlfriend in a wheelchair."
7. In "See You" by Kathleen Jeffrie Johnson, the name of the blind character is Tyler; but what is the name of the kid who feels invisible unless being taunted by others?

Answer: Jason

They call him "Lard Butt" or "Fish Face" for the raw flounder he carts home every Saturday for him and his grandma. Tyler has a crush on Hadley, who's "going out" with Kurt. Tyler lost his vision at age seven due to juvenile diabetes. Jason and Tyler wind up becoming friends when Kurt corners Tyler behind a car dealership and bullies him.
8. "Fatboy and Skinnybones" by Ren`e Salda`na Jr. is about two young men who attend the same school. One of the boys is named Tony, but who's the other one?

Answer: Miguel

His nickname is "Gordo" (or "Fatboy"), while Tony's is "Skinnybones". The two meet up at the supermarket, where Miguel works part-time. Jimmy's the "day manager", and Mary's the worker who was assigned to teach Tony to use the cash register.
9. In "Brainiac" by Alex Flinn, who does Courtney sit next to on her first day as a senior in high school?

Answer: Jasmine

She's "a quiet-looking girl with a white polo shirt all buttoned up, and khaki pants."
Ty's a football player, and Courtney avoids sitting by him because they knew each other when she was not yet a cheerleader. "Better to sit by someone who doesn't know how I was before."
10. The two roommates in "Let's Hear It for Fire Team Bravo" by Robert Lipsyte are Sergeant Whip and Tank.

Answer: False

They're other patients in the hospital along with Bugs and Duke. The two roommates in the beginning of the story are Michael and Eddie, who later become Sergeant Moxie and Maverick.
