Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what town is Oliver Twist born?

Answer: The author doesn't say

In the first chapter of "Oliver Twist" Charles Dickens says he will be prudent from mentioning the name of the birthplace of Oliver, and it wouldn't make any diffrence to the reader whether or not they knew where Oliver Twist was born.
2. How old is Oliver when he returns to the workhouse?

Answer: Nine years old

Oliver was born in the workhouse, but he was raised in a orphan farm, where they kept orphans up to the age of nine. After that they would leave and go to the workhouse.
3. "Oliver Twist" was Charles Dickens's last novel.

Answer: False

"Oliver Twist" was Charles Dickens's second novel, which was after "Pickwick Papers". Charles Dickens's last completed novel was "Our Mutual Friend"; "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" was unfinished since he died before he could finish the book.
4. Mr. Bumble, the parish beadle, dies in the book.

Answer: False

Mr. Bumble does not die in "Oliver Twist", but at the end of the novel, he is in trouble with Mr. Brownlow for selling Oliver's mother's locket and ring, instead of trying to find out who it really belongs to.
5. Who is Fagin?

Answer: A Jewish man who teaches boys how to pickpocket

Fagin teaches young orphan boys to pickpocket for him in return for some food and lodging. Fagin is hanged at the end of the book. Fagin is hanged for thieving and teaching children to thieve.
6. What's Bill Sikes's dog's name?

Answer: Bull's Eye

Bill Sikes's dog is named Bull's Eye. The dog is a terrier who gets beat up a lot by his owner. Whenever Bill is angry, or Bill gets bored, or when the dog is misbehaving Bill kicks him around, which leaves the poor dog with lots of scars and wounds from Bill.
7. What's Oliver's nickname?

Answer: "Nolly"

Oliver gets called Nolly by his acquaintances at Fagin's. No one else he meets him calls him by a nickname.
8. Who kills Nancy?

Answer: Bill Sikes

Nancy is killed by her abusive boyfriend, Bill. Bill finds out she had been helping Oliver escape from Fagin's and taking him to Olivers's friend, Mr. Brownlow. Bill felt Nancy was betraying him by helping Oliver and then he killed her, by clubbing her over the head and hitting her. Mr. Brownlow would never hurt Nancy, Fagin is evil but not evil enough to kill Nancy, and Bob Redberry is a guy I made up.
9. Oliver asks for more soup.

Answer: No

Oliver and some other boys draw straws to find out who's going to ask for some more gruel. Oliver picks the shortest straw, and he has to ask for more. His reward for asking? A hit on the head with a ladle, and being locked up by himself, before being sold to Mr. Sowerberry.

Workhouses don't serve soup or anything just a bit nice to paupers.
10. What is Mr. Sowerberry's job?

Answer: Being a undertaker

Mr. Sowerberry is an undertaker. Oliver was sold to him after asking for more, because the workhouse board members thought he was going to cause more trouble. He dubbs Oliver his mute at children's funerals, and his other servant boy, Noah Cladpole, gets very jealous and beats up Oliver, and treats him poorly as much as he can.
One day Noah makes fun of Oliver's dead mother, and Oliver gets very angry and beats up Noah. Later Oliver manages to escape that dreadful place at the Sowerberrys's, and goes to London.
11. Who marries Mr. Bumble?

Answer: Mrs. Corney

Mr. Bumble finds out shortly in his marriage with Mrs. Corney that his wife is very controlling and wants her husband to serve her, and do what she says. But he still stays with her, and puts up with having a bossy wife.
Mrs. Mann is the head at the orphan farm, and Mrs. Whiteshoe and Mrs. Dunsed are not characters in the book.
12. Who is "Monks"?

Answer: Oliver's half brother

"Monks" is Oliver's half brother. He finds out that Oliver might find out that his mother and himself burned his father's will to give money to Oliver's mother and her child. If Oliver would have gotten the money his father was going to give to him, he would have lived a diffrent life. Monks (real name Edward Leeford, named after his father) wanted to find and kill Oliver, before Oliver could find out.

He also bought Oliver's mother's ring and locket from Mrs. Bumble, that she kept from Oliver's mother's death, to avoid the secret of Oliver's parentage to revealed to anyone. Monks went by the name "Monks" to make sure no one could know who he really was, especailly Mr. Brownlow.
13. Oliver has a middle name.

Answer: False

Mr. Bumble named Oliver, Oliver Twist, and he did not give him a middle name. Oliver was named by Mr. Bumble since his mother died a minute after Oliver's birth and could not name him or tell anyone her surname. So the workhouse board members said Mr. Bumble should name him, because Mr. Bumble was the parish beadle.
14. Who is Mr. Brownlow?

Answer: Oliver's father's friend

Though many debate that Mr. Brownlow is Oliver's grandfather, he is not. He knew Oliver's father, and grandfather, and he was happy to take Oliver in after all the messes he had been in through his short life.
15. What happens to "The Artful Dodger" after he gets arrested?

Answer: We don't know for sure

"The Dodger" also known as Jack Dawkins, was arrested for having a silver nice looking snuff box on him that the police found. They assumed he stole it, for they knew he was a thief, but actually "The Dodger" didn't steal the box, it was his own. But the police didn't think of that, since he dressed like a street urchin, and they wondered why he had it.

After Jack is arrested, he is removed from the court room, and then... no one knows. It is most likely he would have been either hanged or sent to Australia, since that's how the British government dealt with criminals back in the Victorian era, but we don't know which fate he was sent to. I peronaly hope he went to Australia, because he could surive there. If he was hanged... that's game over.
