Sassy was a few years younger than her brother Jamal. Both Jamal and Sassy helped their mother out with washing the dishes and cleaning the house since their father was practically never around. Their mother was a woman who worked hard to make sure her children were protected and supported.

Randy was a member and the leader of the gang known as the Scorpions. There were other members in this gang; their names were Mack, Angel, Indian, Blood, Terry and Bobby. Near the end of the story, Indian wanted to become the new leader of the gang but Randy said that his brother Jamal was to become the new leader.

At the end of the story, Jamal realized that he didn't want to be the leader and when he went to a playground to give a gun to Indian, both Indian and Angel started to attack him.

Jamal wasn't exactly the smartest kid in school. In fact, he was doing poorly when it came to getting school assignments finished. Every time Jamal got into trouble, he would be sent to the principal's office along with other kids that were in trouble too. Mr. Davidson was less harsh on the other kids, and he was heinously cruel to Jamal.

Jamal described Reverend Biggs as a tall, tan-skinned man with wide shoulders that hunched slightly forward as he walked. Earlier in the story, Randy had been stabbed by another inmate and Jamal's mother asked Reverend Biggs to come to her apartment and pray for her family.

When Indian and Angel attacked Jamal at Marcus Garvey Park, Jamal had already given the gun he had to Tito and Tito was at the park too. When Tito saw what was going on, he intervened and used the gun. He wounded Indian very badly and Angel was killed.
