Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who said the quote stated here: "Maybe it's an accident, maybe it's fate, but it appears to me that the strongest of our kind is being hosted by the strongest of theirs"?

Answer: The Comforter

After a "soul" received a host, it was given a "Comforter." That person acted like a guardian or even as a psychiatrist for the soul. Wanderer's Comforter's name was Kathy. She was trying to explain to her that it was okay for the soul to struggle with its host.
2. It was impossible to tell an infested human from a free one.

Answer: False

Although souls looked exactly the same as a regular human, there was one major flaw in their appearance. When light hit their eyes, a silver circle appeared. Often in the book humans proved their own humanity by putting a flashlight to their eyes. Souls also acted much more calmly than humans.
3. What food did Wanderer purchase from the small convenience store in Picacho Peak?

Answer: Water, granola bars, and chips

After Melanie convinced Wanderer to search for Jeb, they stopped at a small store to buy rations. Because she was already hungry, Wanderer bought granola bars and chips. She also picked up a large container of water and a roll of doughnuts. Melanie knew that hydration would be crucial walking through the desert.
4. How much did Wanderer pay for her purchase(s)?

Answer: She didn't pay anything

After the aliens took over the human race, they completely dropped the custom of money. So Wanderer didn't pay for anything when she checked out. The man who owned the store merely scanned the items for inventory purposes.
5. What food did Wanderer/Melanie salvage from an abandoned house?

Answer: Twinkies and crackers

Wanderer constantly ignored Melanie's warnings about conserving their food. Eventually she ran out and began to starve to death. When she spotted the house, she approached it cautiously. Inside of the broken-down home was a crushed package of crackers and Twinkies.
6. Who acted as Wanderer's bodyguard after Jared left on a supply raid?

Answer: Ian

Jared left the group of humans behind when Jeb pointed out that they were running low on supplies. Wanderer was surprised when both Doc and Ian agreed to watch after her. Originally the doctor wanted to experiment on the alien. Ian had actually tried to kill Wanderer when they first met, strangling her until Jeb came to her aid.
7. Which of the following jobs did Wanderer NOT do in the caves?

Answer: Sew clothes

After weeks of hiding away, Jeb pulled Wanderer (who earned the nickname "Wanda") out of her small cave and put her to work. She helped the survivors bake bread, she worked on their various gardens, and she even taught. Jeb was able to convince her that the others wanted to hear her tell stories of all of the aliens and planets she had seen.
8. What food did Wanda crave after staying in the caves for weeks?

Answer: Cheetos

Twice a day Wanda would receive her regular meal. It consisted of water, a broth-filled soup, grainy, dry bread, and odd roots. While Jared watched over her, he tormented her by eating regular food. She could smell the dry cheese from the bag of Cheetos he ate from and craved them.
9. Which of the following humans attempted to murder the alien?

Answer: Kyle

Kyle followed Wanda into the bathing area and first tried to drown her. After failing, he dragged her to the lava-like river and tried to throw her in. He almost succeeded, but when the floor began to give way, he collapsed and almost fell in himself. Wanda ended up saving his life.
10. What did the Seekers give Wanda when they pulled her over for speeding?

Answer: Awake

It was actually Jared that had been speeding. When they saw the familiar red and blue lights of a police car, Wanda switched places with Jared. The cop informed Wanda that a soul had been missing and told her to be careful. When Wanda explained that she had fallen asleep at the wheel, the cop sprayed a grapefruit-flavored mist called "Awake" and she felt her mind grow more alert.
11. What product did Wanderer NOT steal from the hospital?

Answer: Health

Wanda was allowed to shop at all of the stores because she had grown the human's trust. She also went to a hospital in order to steal vastly superior alien medicine. She took "Smooth" to erase scars, "Heal," "No Pain," "Cool" to help fevers, "Clean," and "Inside Clean" to withdraw any bacteria inside a wound. Wanda got the "Health" pills from a pharmacy.
12. What was Wanda's biggest secret?

Answer: She knew how to save the humans from being infested

Wanda did love Jared, but that was no secret. In a previous life she had saved the life of a fellow soul by cutting him out of a damaged host body. She realized she had the knowledge to free every human on Earth, and thus end the invasion.
13. Which of the following names was Wanderer NOT called at one point?

Answer: Sunlight Passing Through the Ice

On the Mists planet, Wanderer was called Lives in the Stars. After saving her friend by implanting him in a huge beast, she was given the name Rides the Beast, which she despised. Wanda also told the policeman who pulled her over that her name was Leaves Above. Jodi, the woman Kyle loved, was named Sunlight Passing Through the Ice, not Wanda.
14. What did the group of raiders see that gave them great hope?

Answer: A family of aliens and a human

While Wanda, Kyle, Ian, and Jared traveled around collecting supplies, they stopped at a hotel. Wanda looked out of the window and witnessed a family having fun at a playground. She mentioned to the men that the couple's child was human. The group witnessed the blissfully happy family run around together.
15. What did Jared and Jamie watch on TV that upset them?

Answer: A basketball game

The television was no longer entertaining. The news was cheerful and uninformative because there was no warring or violence. The shows it displayed were stiffly acted by the aliens and never had a bad ending. And the basketball games were played too chivalrously- players argued with each other, saying their opponent should have the ball. Jared and Jamie thought it was simply boring.
16. What was the fate of the insane Seeker that continuously chased after Wanda?

Answer: She was sent back to another planet

When the Seeker finally found Wanda, she attacked the humans and killed Wes. The humans wanted to seek revenge, but Wanda stopped them. She performed the first successful extraction of a soul from a human host. Both the alien and the human lived. Wanda shipped the crazed Seeker onto another planet light-years away.
17. Who fell in love with the alien Wanda?

Answer: Ian

It was a first- Ian had not fallen in love with Melanie, he had fallen in love with Wanda, the silvery alien. Jamie also loved the alien as much as he loved his sister Melanie- he treated her fairly. In time, Wanda realized she was in love with Ian as well. She told him that no matter what body she inhabited and no matter on what planet she lived on, she would always love him.
18. Which human loved saying "It's my house, my rules"?

Answer: Uncle Jeb

Whenever an argument broke out, Jeb would arrive, his rifle in his arms. Several times he would stroke his weapon and state "It's my house!" People grew tired of his constant warning. In truth, before the aliens arrived, Jeb was a paranoid man, and created the cave that the humans sought shelter in. His paranoia had paid off.
19. What was the soap the humans used made out of?

Answer: Cactus

The group was forced to use a cactus-infused soap that they had learned to create. It burned their skin, but it was all they had. Once Wanda was allowed to go out and shop for supplies, they finally got to use nice shampoos and various soaps that didn't hurt when they used them.
20. At the end of the story, the group found an anomaly. What was it?

Answer: Another soul who was an ally to humans

After Wanda received her new host, she was allowed to once more get supplies for the humans. When the group went to retrieve their trucks, they found an entire group of humans who wanted to meet them. The survivors introduced themselves. In that new group was another soul who had turned his back to his species, just like Wanda. It was a hopeful ending to the story.
